7 Ways to Improve Communication With Your Partner

It’s no secret that we as humans crave connections with others. We love to talk about ourselves, and we love to see our needs being met. The majority of our life, we tend to be egotistical creatures. While focusing on yourself has its moments, this selfish behavior that’s all “me, me me!” can be the reason for your downfall, be it mentally or physically.

When we enter relationships, it’s important to remember that the other person(s) needs affection, love, and acknowledgement. That’s the foundation of most relationships. For relationships to strive, both parties need to give more than they receive, which ironically always leaves both of them satisfied.

Here a few tips to help you engage in better conversations with your partner and improve your communication skills for a healthier relationship.

    Acknowledge the Miscommunication

Do you know what’s worse than not communicating? Not acknowledging that miscommunication.

    via GIPHY

There are no perfect relationships out there. There is no ideal marriage; there is always more that goes on behind the curtains than what most people see. You don’t realize you have a miscommunication problem until someone finally breaks down, or worse, the relationship ends with no closure. If you believe you or your partner are guilty of not communicating, you need to acknowledge this. The first step to continual communication is first realizing there was none in the first place.

    Prioritize Their Needs

See how I said needs and not wants. Every person is different, and your partner might have special needs that need fulfillment every day. You knew this before entering the relationship, otherwise, you wouldn’t be there.

    via GIPHY

This need can come in the physical form (sex) or more on the emotional side (love affirming). If you feel like your partner is slacking on fulfilling your needs, the best thing you can do is remind them. Who knows? Maybe you’re slacking on their behalf, which will open the door to more dialogue and understanding.

Harsh Honesty Is More Than Ok

As stated previously, no relationship is perfect. We understand that, and we love that because if a relationship has no obstacles, something is off. Naval Ravikant said, “Honesty plus love will get you through most situations.”

    via GIPHY

Sugarcoated white lies may seem to satisfy your partner in the short term, but if you’re in it for the long haul, you might want to change it up. Surely there is something your partner does that annoys you or makes you lose your shit. It’s okay; it’s not the end of the world. A more straightforward method is informing them what they’re doing wrong, why it’s bothering you, and how both of you can work together to prevent it in the future. Teamwork makes the dream work. Or in this case, the relationship.

Put Your Phone Down and Listen

Pay attention to your partner. Sit next to your partner. When your partner is speaking to you, listen. There is power in listening! That’s literally the key lesson in any self-development book.

    via GIPHY

When you listen to your partner, you are confirming you care about the problem at hand. Imagine speaking to someone, and every two minutes, they check their phone? What does that tell you? Other than that person being incredibly rude, it tells you they’re not interested in what you have to say. How do you expect anything to work if you don’t pay attention and listen

    Can’t Budge Holding a Grudge

You’ve had issues in the past, that’s understandable. If you’ve moved past them without fully resolving them, then you’ve got a dilemma.

If a few issues are left unresolved, then all issues will be left unresolved. If you’re in a relationship where you feel like bringing up past concerns to resolve them will create more predicaments than you’re in the wrong relationship. It hurts to hear, but that’s the truth.

    via GIPHY

Couples regularly bring issues to light so they can acknowledge their faults, find a solution, and move on. You can’t expect to move on, let alone be open with your partner if you refuse to identify a relationship’s difficulties. Grudges are never let go by silence alone.

Grudges are never let go by silence alone.

    Create Healthier Habits Together

Here are a few habits you can build with your partner that will bring you closer and help grow the relationship: cook breakfast together, workout at the same gym, go night jogging, journaling, meditation, have an “honest hour,” plan a date night every week, and so much more.

    via GIPHY

Why is spending time together so important? Two researchers from the Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota have found that married couples in the U.S. are happier and more fulfilled when they are together than apart, underscoring the importance of spending time with a spouse for individual well-being.

    Appreciate Your Partner

Easy enough, right? If you genuinely love them, it won’t be that difficult, I promise. This has been a life-changer for my partner and me.

Personally, I want nothing more than to be appreciated as a wife and mother. A study of divorce conducted by law professor Margaret Brinig and economist Douglas Allen found that the number one reason women leave their partners is that they feel unappreciated or ignored (Source). Why do you think men leave? They feel neglected. It’s a two-way street

  • Fun Socially Distant Summer Date Ideas

Fun Socially Distant Summer Date Ideas

Even though the summer of 2020 is coming to an end, there’s still time to get some fun summer dates in! If you’re not sure what your options are in this uncertain time, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Here are some of best socially distant summertime dates.

    Outdoor Dining

Going out to dinner is a cherished date night tradition, but it’s been long overdue since quarantine. Thankfully, restaurants are finding clever and creative ways to make dining safe again. They’re doing a great job of following state guidelines and only seating people at every other table or spreading their tables farther apart.

Try to go during off-peak hours to avoid any crowds. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to find a restaurant located on the water. A gorgeous view and an ocean breeze will be the cherry on top of a perfect dinner date.

Do your due diligence before you go. Call ahead and ask what kind of precautions the restaurant is taking. Staff should be wearing masks, customers should have to wear masks when they’re not seated at their table, and all of the tables should be cleaned in between customers.

Bonus points if they have one-time use menus or digital ones. It’s also great if they have personal ketchup and sauce containers to prevent germ spread from communal bottles.

    Go On A Picnic

Picnics are a classic and romantic date idea. Now, they serve another purpose by keeping you socially distant! They’re fun and easy to throw together last minute.

This is your opportunity to shine. Show off your skills and make a beautiful charcuterie board. Everything tastes better when it’s aesthetically pleasing. Add a bottle of wine and you’re set up to have a great time with your partner.

If you’re more low maintenance, a picnic doesn’t have to consist of Instagram-able food in a wicker basket. Grab a pick-up order from your favorite restaurant, sit on an old bed sheet, and eat out of the to-go containers.

    Drive-Ins

An attraction that is rapidly increasing in popularity during quarantine is the drive-in. Beaches, parks, restaurants, movie theaters, and basically any business with a big parking lot are trying to get into the drive-in business.

Of course, it’s fun to watch a classic movie sitting next to your boo, but movies aren’t the only drive-in option anymore. Comedians and concerts are also finding cool and creative solutions to bring you live entertainment. Keep an open mind and see who’s coming to your area.

Staying in your car could seem boring, but you should think about it the same way you think about tailgating. Bring food, snacks, and drinks to enjoy during the show. Bring your friend with the pick-up and hang out in the bed of the truck.

If you don’t want to sit outside of your car, I don’t blame you! The hot and humid summer weather can be a killer. Drive-ins give you the perfect excuse to blast your air conditioning and escape the suffocating heat.

Don’t Be Afraid To Stay Home

Staying home is a great way to stay safe. This option is also an affordable date, if not completely free! Staying at home leaves you with a variety of date options from making playful pillow forts to having a bake-off.

You can get as creative as you want, but let’s go over some of the underrated stay at home dates.

    The Classic Movie Night

Don’t skip over this date night idea just because it feels overdone. All it takes is a little effort to make it feel special. You know that movie you keep saying you’ll watch but never do? Now is the time to watch it. If you don’t know what you want to watch, everyone loves Hamilton.

If you have more time, consider doing a whole movie marathon. There are dozens of fun series out there like Back to the Future or the Marvel superhero movies. Use the series as inspiration to decorate your home and really get into the spirit.

Take advantage of the nice weather and set up a projector in your backyard. Hang a white sheet for your screen and you’re all set. If you don’t have a projector, take your laptop outside and create a little movie theater in a tent or on a table.

Either way, you’re going to need a boat load of snacks. Movie theater popcorn, pizza, and ice cream always hit the spot on movie night. Throw caution to the wind and get some movie theater candy too.

    Game Night

Board games are the best. Two player games, like Guess Who, create hours of fun. Search up different two player games on Google or Amazon to find the best one for you. You don’t have to get too fancy; a deck of cards is all you need to have a great game night.

Video games are an amazing alternative, especially if you’re partner is a gamer. Find out what’s so special about the game they devote hours of their life to. If you’re the gamer, open up this part of your life to your partner and show them why you love it.

This is also a great activity to take outdoors. Video games can be set up on a projector and board games can be played literally anywhere. Summertime also brings in the opportunity to play pool games, like Marco Polo. Everyone loves a competitive round of Marco Polo.

No matter what game you play, you’ll learn something new about your partner. It’s always interesting to see someone’s problem solving skills at work!

Keep An Eye Out For Local Hotspots

Sunflower, lavender, and other flower fields are really popular in the summer. Sunflowers can even be turned into mazes, just like corn. These gorgeous spots make a great day trip filled with photo ops.

Same goes for blueberry, peach, and other fruit farms that allow picking. Then you can come home with a bucket of your favorite fruit and make pies and other delicious desserts together.

Check your local newspaper or website for any outdoor art installations or displays. Some museums have an outdoor section that could be available to walk through.

They’re all outdoors which makes them a great socially distant date. Plus, you’ll finally have something to add to Instagram that will break up your feed full of quarantine selfies.

    Final Tips

Don’t be afraid to get dressed up for these dates, even the stay at home ones! Wear that dress that’s been sitting in your closet since March. Break out the wedges and the curling iron. It will feel so good to put on real clothes after wearing sweatpants for three months straight.

Step out of your comfort zone. Watch a movie you would never think about watching or cook that meal you’re afraid of messing up. There aren’t any rules, so you can’t go wrong. Get creative and get out there!

  • 8 Creative (+ Romantic) Indoor Dates

8 Creative (+ Romantic) Indoor Dates

With everyone around the world still on lockdown, couples everywhere are forced to make the best out of their situation while staying indoors. Many are celebrating their anniversaries from the comfort of their couch, and others have brought out their creative side to keep the romance sparkling.

Believe it or not, indoor dates with your partner are a great way to reconnect on a more intimate level. Why is that? It gives you both a chance to re-discover the traits you fell in love with when you first met. If your dates always consisted of crowded places, then this is your chance to create something more meaningful between the two of you.

Are you ready for a bond that goes beyond Netflix and chilling? Here are eight creative indoor dates that will cure boredom and keep the sparks flying.

    Paint a Room

Are you or your partner painters? It’s alright if you’re not because this won’t require much experience. You can master anything nowadays by watching YouTube. Painting is a therapeutic experience, and if you’re the artful couple, then this may be an excellent way to spend your date at home.

    via GIPHY

Pick a room in your home that can use a change, agree on a color (or colors), and start painting together! This video provides essential painting tips that will help you get started. If you are renting a property, painting on canvas is another marvelous idea.

    Blaze It (In the Kitchen)

When it comes to food, it’s safe to say my partner and I are always famished. We eat a lot. Couples who eat together, stay together, right? So why not kick it up a notch and initiate a cooking competition? Nothing too brutal, obviously, this isn’t Masterchef.

    via GIPHY

But you can make it enjoyable by setting some ground rules (ECCO rules), and the loser having to either give something up or commit to cleaning up after dinner.

This is a great way to enjoy each other’s company and spice it up in the kitchen. Wine should be present, uncontrollable laughter is a guarantee, and profanity is a must. I know it’s just a friendly competition, but in the end…there can only be one winner.

Order Take out + Virtual Tour

Since all our favorite restaurants are closed due to the pandemic, few are offering take-out. Thank God for those of us who have children. If you decide that sitting on your couch, eating Thai food, and watching a virtual tour online is the best date night choice, then so be it. If anything, I am sincerely jealous since my partner neither likes take-out or watching anything longer than twenty minutes.

    via GIPHY

Expect lots of cuddling, “wow”s, and depending on your take-out- plenty of gas. Yes, romance is in the air, but it’s best you don’t breathe it in at the moment.

    Marco Polo  (The Adult Version)

Ah, touchy time. It’s scientifically proven that anything that involves a blindfold after twenty-one is sexy time (don’t Google that). Are you ready to turn your childhood game into a sex game? Hey, it’s still a date night, after all.

You or your partner will wear a blindfold, and the other will situate themselves somewhere in the room. You can stick with the traditional “Marco Polo,” or you can dig deeper and get a little dirty. The idea is to get your partner (and yourself) as riled up as possible before…you know

    via GIPHY

Don’t forget champagne, chocolate, whipped cream, chocolate-covered strawberries…your choices are endless. You didn’t read those 50 Shades of Grey books for nothing, right?.

    Sleep Under the Stars

If you own a backyard, then camping out underneath the stars is literally the best date idea ever. It’s not the wilderness; it’s better. You can go number two in your own bathroom. S’mores? Pop them in the oven. Wild animals? There aren’t any. Alcohol? Plenty. When gazing at the stars, you can simply stare and be at peace, or you can show off your smarticles and name the constellations.

    via GIPHY

Regardless, wrapped in the arms of your loved ones at the end of the day is all the comfort you need to end this spontaneous date.

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane

Remember when,” have to be the two most nostalgic words in the English language. They refer back to the struggles, the success, the losses, the wins, the heartbreaks, and the day you fell in love with your significant other. If you have photo albums, now’s the time to dust them off.

    via GIPHY

Watching videos is another great way to reminisce and hold your partner closer. Memories can spark joy or tears, and maybe tears of joy. Sit back, relax, grab a wine bottle, and take a stroll back in time.

    Shoot a YouTube Video

If you’ve never done it before, this is the time. You’re stuck at home all day anyways! You can talk about anything, create a tutorial, something personal for loved ones, show off your baking skills, show off your musical talents, or even teach a course.

    Recreate Your First Date

    Simple, right?

Or is it? Who here remembers how they met their partners, let alone their first date? In all honesty, I don’t. But if you do, you can surprise your partner by recreating the moment you made it official. Try your best to arrange the setting to match that day. To make it more interesting, act out like it’s the first time you’re really meeting!

    Good luck, and stay safe!

  • What to Consider Before Tying the Knot

What to Consider Before Tying the Knot

Before one does anything life-changing, they usually think of everything it will affect in their future. For example, if you’re moving to another state, you will undoubtedly research the area you’re moving to, the crime rates, school district, transportation, weather, and so much more. If you’re familiar with the “fight or flight” response, then you know well that as humans, we’ve evolved to create safe spaces and develop connections with others, prioritizing our wellbeing.

    via GIPHY

According to the CDC, in the U.S alone, there is one divorce approximately every 36 seconds. That’s 2,400 divorces per day! The percentage of divorces since the 1980s hasn’t budged much in the last four decades, and the reasons are endless, but that’s not our story for today. If you’re lucky enough to find a partner to spend life’s precious moments with, that’s wonderful! Here’s what you might have to consider before deciding to put a ring on it and remaining healthy throughout the marriage.

    Who They Are

How well do you know your soulmate? How long have you two been together? Are you familiar with their routines? Their likes and dislikes? How about this: do you know their middle name or even their favorite color?

Yes, these questions sound a bit outrageous, but if you find yourself not knowing the answer to even one of these questions, then few reconsiderations are in order. No, that doesn’t mean you have to reconsider everything you know, but knowing your partner is a vital part of every marriage.

    via GIPHY

A study was conducted where 47 married couples completed an attitude familiarity questionnaire to see how well they knew their partners. It concluded that attitude familiarity with your spouse “also related to lower overall ambulatory systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.” Truly knowing your partner is a vital link in a sustainable relationship.

    Addictions Cause Friction

It’s no secret that addictions can not only ruin lives but take them, as well. If you’re entering a marriage with a partner who has a worrisome habit, let me stop you right there.

A person’s addictions (and that person can be you) can have irreversible damage on a marriage. It’s been said a million times before, and it’s a widely known fact: an addict’s needs and obsession with their drug of choice will always override the needs of their partner, children, career, and apparent necessities.

    via GIPHY

Keep in mind that addicts are mentally ill people who will do whatever it takes to get what they want. This includes lying to cover up tracks, quitting their job, infidelity, and landing a family in massive debt. Because of their unreliability, it’s common to see the other spouse become the primary caretaker. If you or your partner is battling with addiction, get help, and avoid wedding bells for the time being

    Role-Play (Not That One)

When you think of your partner’s role after marriage, what do you envision? Do you see them staying at home and taking care of the kids while you’re working a 9-5 job? Or do you see yourself working from home in your office, while your partner takes care of everything else? Who’s the chef? Are women solely responsible for cleaning up after you and sorting out your laundry, or have we broken down those traditional sexist barriers already?

    via GIPHY

What you assume may not be what you bargained for. Master life coach and counselor, David Essel, says, “these assumptions can kill a relationship.” Premarital counseling is imperative for particular couples, but not enough choose to see a professional. Ask your partner what your role should be in a marriage. Their answer may or may not scare you.

    Let’s Talk Careers

Who’s the breadwinner of the family?

According to the CPS, “among married-couple families, both the husband and wife were employed in 48.0 percent of families”. Even a mediocre lifestyle has a big price stamp on it at the end of the month, and bills must be paid.

More families are choosing to work to bring in a more substantial sum of income at the end of the month. Traditionally, it’s always been the man’s job to… well, have a job. With more women entering the work field, tradition is getting its ass kicked. Not that I’m complaining, of course.

    via GIPHY

If your job requires long hours, several meetings, traveling, late nights, or even early mornings, you might want to check in with your partner. Before marriage, it’s something that one rarely thinks about, but after marriage is a whole different story.

    Unresolved Issues

All couples have their ups and downs, their rights and wrongs, and their own way of forgiveness. Think: is there something that has occurred in your relationship that you’ve decided to forget and not forgive?

    via GIPHY

Be very cautious as these events can lead to anger and miscommunication even after marriage. I know you don’t need a professional to inform you that communication is a crucial part of any marriage, and a clean slate is required for a new beginning. Hiding how you feel towards certain events can lead to suppression of anger/depressions, which will-believe me- end a marriage. Find time to sit with your partner and bring up any unresolved issues.

Talk about them, cry about them, and together, start anew.

  • Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts/Ideas

    Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts/Ideas

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you might start feeling the pressure of finding the perfect gift for that ideal person-be it your partner, friend, child, or even pet. From my experience, it always felt like last-minute ideas carried more thought than overthinking your gift-giving and hoping for the best. While the traditional flowers and chocolate are the go-to for this particular day, there are so many options and get this; not everything has to be red and pink, as tempting as that is.

So without further ado, here are a few affordable, hearty, last-minute ideas and gifts to surprise that special someone.

    Name Engraved Necklace

You can find engraved necklaces at any jewel retailer in your area. Or you can find it online by just doing a quick google search. While the target audience is mostly women, I genuinely believe engraved necklaces are for everyone. The options are endless, and you can buy a set for you and your partner. ONecklace has some of the lowest prices and several options to choose from, so get a pair while they’re still on sale!

Idea: The heart and key necklaces are always a grand idea. You give one to your special someone, and one for you, so that way, you’ll have something to remind you of them.

    Bath Bomb Gift Set

The best thing about Valentine’s Day is it’s not just the chocolates that are on sale. Bath and body care products are fantastic gift ideas! Would I choose them over flowers and chocolate? Uhm, definitely. The sets are arranged beautifully, and everything is scented like a Midnight Summer’s Dream. Bath and Body Works ends to have incredible deals year-round, but it’s always extra special on Valentine’s Day. Lush also has some beautiful sets, as well.

Idea: Draw a bath for your partner, grab a bottle of wine, throw in a unicorn bath bomb, and enjoy a bath together… with John Legend playing in the background, of course.

    Limited Edition/Exclusive Wine

If you’re not aware of how romantic limited edition wine can be, well…you know now. Wine is an event planner on its own; it shifts all events into place. Of course, there’s always the option of buying from your local supermarket. Just because it’s a special day does not mean you need to empty your wallet on a particular item. For some great options, click here.

Idea: Set up a room in the house to surprise your partner. Spread rose petals, set up candles, and prepare two wine glasses just for the two of you. The wine will take care of the rest.

    Fill-In-The-Blank Journal

The What I Love About Us journal is one of those presents that make you feel like a kid again. It’s one of those things that you’d love to fill out with your partner first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed. It’s something so simple but requires you to think intently about what it is you love about your relationship.

Idea: Every other day, one of you pick a phrase to fill out, then discuss it with your significant other.

    Book Set

What’s a gift that you can open over and over again? You guessed it, folks, book! Books are practical, useful gifts. They increase in value as years go by, and it doesn’t require much thought, assemble, or batteries for that matter! Give the gift of fitness. I mean, what’s more attractive than getting fit together? The fitness industry is forever growing, so apparel is just one of many choices. You can also choose a fitness watch, new sneakers, or new gym equipment. Several sports retailers hold limited sales on holidays like this, so be quick to catch some deals before everything’s gone!

Idea: Buy matching sportswear and dedicate three days to the gym together. Couples who workout together, stay together!

    Lingerie

After all, it is still Valentine’s Day. Lingerie has a rep for being expensive, but thanks to the internet and thousands of lingerie brands, that’s not the case anymore. Rihanna’s recent launch of her lingerie line is epic. It’s insanely affordable, high quality, and offers sizes up to 3X! That’s a huge deal for some people who have a difficult time find the perfect fit. For an unforgettable night, look into laces and strings. And diamond rings. But that’s a topic for another day.

Idea: Do I really have to tell you?

    Polaroid Camera

Memories can last a lifetime. What happened to good old Kodak cameras and polaroid shots? With smartphones able to provide us with everything with just the touch of our finger, old fashioned has become…old. Most Polaroid cameras nowadays come with bundles, stickers, and accessories. • Affordable Winter Getaways for the Newlyweds

Affordable Winter Getaways for the Newlyweds

Friends, can you believe we’re already two weeks into the new year? How? The last couple of weeks feel like they never even existed. Half the time, I was in a food coma…or passed out drunk.

You probably were, too, so let’s not judge. While that was fun, it’s now time to snap back to reality and resume our rightful duties.

Over the break, one of my dearest friends got engaged, yay! If I’m honest, the night is kind of blurry, but I do remember drunkenly opening a very expensive bottle of champagne to celebrate.

My partner was not happy. What’s done is done, and now it’s time to (help) plan a wedding! Granted, I do have until the end of the year considering their wedding in November, but that’s what makes this so exciting. Everything is more enjoyable in winter! And a hell of a lot cheaper!

Related Article: Planning a Winter Wedding?

But recently, I’ve discovered The Secret. It’s not really about the wedding. It’s about what happens after. It’s about the honeymoon, the getaway, exotic cities, and the newlywed suite with little bottles of alcohol for $9…so I want to help you find the most affordable places to get that. Here are some insanely affordable winter getaways that won’t break the bank.

    Vienna, Austria

I’ve written so much about Vienna in winter because it is an absolute Christman wonderland. That’s why around December, they have a high tourism season, so waiting till after New Year’s may be the more suitable option. Known for its Christmas market, love of music, exceptional coffee cafes, palaces, and giant Ferris wheel, Vienna was voted number one city for its quality of life (Independent).

    Hotels.com

It’s no wonder millions of tourists flock there around the holiday season. If you choose to get away to Vienna post-holidays, you’ll find incredible sales, better accommodations, lower rates for air travel, and the festive atmosphere still in motion. But make sure to pack extra sweaters, it’s freezing over here!

    Costa Rica

Rainforests, tropical beaches, dreamy sunsets, and majestic scenery. The dry season (mid-December to April) is commonly known as the best time to visit this tropical paradise. While temperatures range from region to region, this location is an affordable getaway no matter what time of year.

    Lonely Planet Images

According to Kayak, the cheapest ticket found from the U.S to Costa Rica can be as low as $200. It’s always recommended to book in advance, no matter the destination, but if you’re looking for an adventurous and incredibly affordable honeymoon, then Costa Rica maybe your dream escape. Make sure to bring along small bills because you do not want to leave without souvenirs for family and friends!

    Tampa, Florida

If you’re looking for a warm, modest, reasonable, and amiable location, then look no further than Tampa. Florida gets a bad rep as a vacation choice, but if you dig deeper, you’ll find it’s a relaxing getaway nonetheless. If you’re in the U.S, then driving to Florida is an option, but even if you choose flying, prices can go as low as $200 (Kayak).

    Dennis Macdonald

Here is a list of budget-friendly hotels that go as low as $200 and are near some of Tampa’s best tourist attractions.

    Banff, Canada

According to U.S News Travel, Banff was voted #2 in the best places to visit in Canada. And for all the right reasons, of course. If you’re looking for a romantic, icy getaway, but can’t afford to fly to the wintery slopes of Switzerland, then Banff is an ideal alternative.

    Banff Jasper Collection

Filled with wildlife, fairytale landscape, hikes, tours, and gondola rides, Banff is an experience you will never forget. The best time to visit this secluded gem in the Canadian Rockies is December to March when the weather is slightly warmer, and hotel rates are at a more reasonable cost.

    New Orleans, Louisiana

Ok, why New Orleans? If you’re a foodie like me, you know. But if you’re a foodie and a blues & jazz lover, then you know. I’m talking Cafe Beignet, Mr. B’s Bistro, GW Fins, BB King’s Blue Clubs, and so much more! The bucket list for foods to devour is endless

    TravelZoo

But enough about the food (as if anything else matters), let’s get into why Crescent City was ranked number one place to visit in February (U.S News Travel). You always want to make weather one of your priorities when traveling, and New Orleans in the winter is the best time. You can explore nearly everything on foot here, and as long as you’re not planning on staying in the French Quarters, the accommodations rate is reasonably priced. Tickets go as low as $60 (CheapOair)! That leaves your pocket full for all that excellent Creole cuisine you’re going to eat!

Bring your partying pants with you, because New Orleans is truly the city that never sleeps.

  • Eight Things to Do Every Day to Keep Your Relationship Strong

Eight Things to Do Every Day to Keep Your Relationship Strong

Before I had my first real long term relationship, everyone around me always had a habit of letting me in on know how relationships work. They require hard work, a ton of energy, constant arguments, and more than a few sleepless nights.

You can guess what that did to my sense of commitment…

    via GIPHY

But, you live, and you learn, and you realize that other people’s relationship status does not dictate your own.

If you’re ever lucky enough to find that one person to dedicate your life to, you’re going to realize that you will need constant maintenance to keep your connection secure and healthy. From what I’ve learned, maintaining a relationship is very similar to planting a seed. You will need to continually take care of it, provide it with enough nourishment, and love in order for it to grow.

With that being said, there are numerous ways (countless really) to keep a relationship sturdy and robust.

Start Your Day The Right Way

It sounds simple enough, right? That’s because it truly is.

    via GIPHY

If you live with your partner, then you know that some nights, we tend to fall asleep furious at each other. It could be the result of any circumstances that might have triggered you both during your day.

In an interview with Kyle Benson, psychologist Susan David explains how “When people bottle, they are pushing aside their emotions, and their partner can often feel that they aren’t present—that they aren’t authentic or vulnerable in the relationship.” It’s commonly understood how unhealthy bottling emotions can be, primarily when it’s between two people. By starting your day with intimacy such as sex, cuddling, pillow talk, the bond linking two people strengthens.

    The Little Things Matter

It’s incredibly common for lust and passion to wear off as a relationship elongates. It’s the brutal truth.

    via GIPHY

In the beginning, it was everyday sex, chocolates, flowers, date nights, and so much more. Now, this is not to say it dies off completely, but there’s a noticeable difference. Of course, several factors are involved when it reaches this point. Therapist Daniel Tomasulo explains how “the demise often involves thwarted expectations that, over time, erode the connection. Love that was once flourishing becomes unrequited, resulting in less engagement, simulation, and satisfaction.”

So how do we avoid this? Well, for once, it’s healthy to keep the element of surprise present in the relationship! For example, flowers on a random day, date night at your favorite restaurant, trying a new sex move, or even bringing home a new Pyrex pan for your partner!

    Hey, worked on me.

    Tell Them About Your Day

    That’s it. That’s literally it.

    via GIPHY

You sit with your partner wherever they may be. You’re drinking a hot cup of chocolate, it’s snowing outside, The Office is playing on Netflix, you’re wrapped up in a blanket probably designed by Martha Stewart, and your partner is curled up under your arms. So take this time to ask them how their day was, or tell them about your day. Tell them about a new book you found, a show you’re interested in, or a recipe you’re excited to try out.

    Show Appreciation

    Observe. And learn.

I appreciate your cooking. I appreciate your presence. I appreciate your love, your care, your humbleness, your generosity, your smile, your laughter, your messages, your calls. I appreciate you.

    via GIPHY

But it’s not just stating your appreciation, it’s showing it. It’s taking care of your partner, showing them how much you love them, and reminding them how much they mean to you. Easy, right?

    Show Affection

Affection is not only based on your sex life. There are several ways to show love that include physical, verbal, and emotional. The forms of affection include hugs, touches, massages, listening, and so much more.

    via GIPHY

Marriage and Family therapist Gabrielle Applebury says how “Showing affection in your relationship is an important aspect of maintaining intimacy.” It’s always the little things that make the most significant difference.

    Hit The Gym

Couples that workout together stay together. I personally stand by this statement. The benefits of exercise and the science behind how it affects the human mentality are endless.

    via GIPHY

And yes, you guessed it, it’s an excellent habit to create, especially with your partner. You get the chance to plan your workouts together, stay healthy, and meet your fitness goals!

    Set New Goals Every Day

    Speaking of goals…

Think of how to better not only your relationship but your life together in general. Think about how you are going to propel towards that goal with your significant other. Talk about it, dream about, always discuss it.

    via GIPHY

Emotional Fitness therapist Barton Goldsmith explains how “This alignment is critical for creating harmony and allowing you both to reach your dreams. Once that alignment is secure, there is no limit to how much you can accomplish together.” Forming a goal is a lifetime commitment. By building it with your partner, it strengthens your attachment with each other.

    Share Your Thoughts

I do mean the good, the bad, and the ugly. We are not always going to have healthy thoughts, and that’s ok. The most important thing is to talk about it with your partner. Share everything you think because communication is vital in any relationship.

    via GIPHY

Share what you’re contemplating, have your partner share, discuss, and talk about how you feel towards it all in the end.

  • Fun Recipes to Cook with Your Significant Other

Fun Recipes to Cook with Your Significant Other

In the twenty-six years that I have been alive on this planet; I can safely say that food is the number one thing that delivers joy to people like nothing else. It’s a known fact, but really, it does more than that. It sparks a few joyful memories, childhood memories, sad memories, and sometimes even bitter memories.

You get my point. No matter what culture you come from, everyone has a unique way of bonding over food. It’s fun, time-worthy, and if you know what you’re doing in the kitchen, people will ultimately fall head over heels in love with you.

We’re nearing 2020, so trust me when I tell you that the way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach. So what are you waiting for? Get hold of your soulmate and get ready to feel the heat!

New York Strip Steak with Sweet Potato Fries

When we think romantic dinners, our minds tend to stray to candlelit steak dinners. Social media has succeeded in conditioning our mind to think that, at least.

Let’s be honest here; just thinking of a steak dinner for only the two of you is sexy as hell. While some people go to extremes when preparing steak, I can tell you now that a sprinkle of sea salt and freshly cracked pepper will do the trick. Years of watching Gordon Ramsay yell at other chefs for being incompetent; I’ve become somewhat of an expert.

    KitchMe

While you can go for regular potato fries, there’s something about sweet potato fries that complements the taste buds. For sides, try something light like an arugula salad or grilled veggies. Wine, of course, is a must.

Steak dinners are inexpensive, require little seasoning, and are thoroughly delicious. What’s more tender than a romantic dinner you’ve cooked up together? To learn how to cook the perfect steak, click here.

    Spaghetti & Meatballs

How did I jump from steak dinners to something as juvenile as spaghetti? Steak dinners were pre and post marriage, and spaghetti dinners were post-babies. Yup.

But still, have you seen Lady and the Tramp? Spaghetti should be the original steak dinners. Because spaghetti requires numerous steps, it’s perfect to have your partner to help you out. While placing the pasta in hot water is manageable, the sauce is what makes it perfect.

    Taste of Home

Lucky for you, after several attempts of different sauces (and countless, useless hours scrolling through Pinterest), I have the perfect one. You can choose to mold the ground beef into meatballs or leave it as is with the sauce. Because both my kids are under the age of three, I leave it as is. Or because I’m too lazy to shape them.

So whether your home is a kids-free zone or not, cooking up some spaghetti is a great way to spend the afternoon and reminisce about old times.

    Stuffed Chicken with Jasmine Rice

One of my personal favorites! A recipe that was passed down from my grandma to my mother and from my mother to moi.

This is a weekly dish in my home because it is easy, delicious, and my husband always lends a hand. It’s our special dish that we enjoy cooking together. When you google stuffed chicken, the results are endless, the ingredient list is too long, and sometimes too fancy.

    Recipe 4 Living

Well, fear not, because fancy has no place in my home! All you’ll need is a large chicken and a quarter cup of Calrose rice. We season the rice with salt, pepper, and wait for it, two pinches of cinnamon. I preferably add a diced onion and cut up the liver that comes with the chicken and add it to the mix. Proceed to stuff the chicken, sew it up, and place it in a preheated oven.

Sea salt and freshly cracked pepper have always been my go-to for chicken seasoning. We prefer a side of Jasmine rice with our chicken, but a house salad is a great choice as well, considering it’s already stuffed with rice.

    Pizza

    Did someone say pizza party?

Yes, it was me, ready to eat two whole pizzas, if necessary. The one who doubts me will be made a fool. When it comes to making pizza, be distinctive.

    King Arthur Flour

Add gouda or ricotta with your mozzarella, choose anchovies as a topping, learn how to make the stuffed crust! If pizza isn’t your thing (impossible), then consider making calzones.

    They’re literally pizza burritos.

Homemade Tacos with Pico De Gallo

Yes, I saved the easiest and most fun for last. First order of business: head over to your nearest Ralph’s and purchase some taco seasoning.

The joy in making tacos genuinely comes from putting together your taco. I admit, my tacos always end up being a sort of burrito, but I take comfort in knowing I am not alone. Prepping for tacos is excellent because all you’re doing is dicing tomatoes, cutting up lettuce, and slicing jalapenos while shooting up a conversation with your partner.

    Mexican Please

In our home, we make a tahini sour cream dressing that is out of this world, and we add pomegranate (yes, pomegranate) arils to our tacos. Simple, quick, and always leaves you craving more.

No matter what recipes you come up with, you should know that the quality time you spend with your loved one is all that matters. If the whole point is to be around them, even PB&J sandwiches will do! If this list has taught me one thing, it’s that I should seriously consider starting a food blog. Happy eating!

  • Outdoor Activities To Check Off Your Summer Bucket List

Outdoor Activities To Check Off Your Summer Bucket List

Summer is great. The kids are out of school, the weather is hotter, there seems like there’s nothing to do yet for some reason, your to-do list keeps growing longer and the day seems never to end.

Unfortunately, nowadays, the majority of people would rather spend their days inside with the air conditioning blasting on high. If you’re not a parent, you might have your own plans on how to spend your summer days, and that’s ok, but for those of us with children…

    via GIPHY

Let’s just say it’s not the most spontaneous thing watching your kids spend the whole day watching TV and playing video games till their minds grow numb.

No matter how busy you are (parent or not), here are just a few activities to help you kick off the summer and keep you hustling.

    Go on a hike

Why not, right? The weather is perfect for this particular activity, and your friends have been begging you to spare a day and join them on some new trail they discovered!

Fortunately, this is a beautiful family activity, as well.

    via GIPHY

Even if you’re a fitness enthusiast, nature will always have the upper hand when it comes to getting a workout in. The best part (for me at least), you can include your dog. Not only that, but hiking requires little to no equipment! It’s an excellent experience for the little ones, the sights you’ll see are remarkable, and getting to be all around that greenery and fresh air is stimulating and very rejuvenating!

    Set up a camping trip

I remember as a child; I never had to think about planning a camping trip, because hello, ‘that’s what mom was for.

    via GIPHY

But now, being a mom myself, I had to learn how to do all that myself.

First, acknowledge that camping is possibly the best thing in the whole world. You get away from whatever life ‘you’ve got going on; you get to spend quality time with your family and friends, you uncover new things such as fishing, setting up a tent, and even building a fire. If that’s not enough, you will also get your daily dose of Vitamin D, peace of mind, the sounds of nature, and of course, the second-best possible thing in the world…S’mores.

Spend the night at the beach

By night, I do mean: get there in time to watch the sunset and the sky fill with orange, red, violet hues and gaze in awe at the jaw-dropping beauty that is our planet.

    via GIPHY

If you thought meditation was good for the soul, try stargazing at a beach in the middle of the night. The sound of the waves coming and going, the crisp night air filling your lungs, and the smell of the ocean decluttering your mind. This is one of those spurs of the moment plans. You can bring a sleeping bag or set up a tent, and that’s it!

    Visit an Amusement Park

Growing up in SoCal, this was our thing. Our family would at least hit three amusement parks a week. Despite long lines and the expensive food (we eventually started sneaking in our own), the atmosphere encompassing an amusement park makes you feel giddy all over. If rides aren’t your thing, then that’s fine. You can still join in on the fun because now, several parks offer entertainment, plays/shows, and tours.

    via GIPHY

If it’s too hot for roller coaster rides, then find the nearest water park in your area. Whether you’re going with friends, family, or by yourself, it’s a smart and exhilarating way to cool down.

    Build your very own waterpark

Yes, you read that right, you can build a waterpark right in your backyard. If you’re looking to save money, invent something new, and be in the comfort of your own home, then this is the activity for you. The best part about this activity is that you can have your little helpers give you a hand so they can keep busy, as well. It’s all part of the fun experience before setting everything up and enjoying the ride.

If you need help getting started, click here.

    Learn something new

I get it. School’s over, and we want to have fun only. I don’t mean to be that person-especially since it’s summer- but learning something new is fun.

    via GIPHY

You don’t even have to sign up for a class or get up early or make it feel like a responsibility. Learning something new could be as simple as perfecting a recipe or as complicated as learning a new language.

Granted, you will not learn a new language in 3 months, but getting started is what counts.

Seriously, it could be anything! Two summers ago, I learned how to rollerblade, and now I practice it religiously. My point being, you never know what your next addiction could be, so why not?

  • The Four Types of Couples on July 4th

The Four Types of Couples on July 4th

Bye, Bye Miss American Pie! Summer is finally here and it’s time to put some thought into your 4th of July of plans. Independence day is the perfect opportunity to let loose or lay back. Whether it’s your first or twenty-first 4th of July spent with your significant other, here are foolproof tips to make it one for the books.

    The Party- Going Couple

Shots, shots, shots, everybody! So, you took the Friday off of work and you plan to waste no time getting your groove on; more power to you! The options for celebrating America are endless. If you really want to get out there, east- coasters take the train to the Hamptons for a lively day at the beach. Looking for something in NYC? Head to one of the many rooftops downtown for a time that won’t disappoint. For those on the West Coast, you can’t go wrong with spending the day at Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach. Come on, you deserve to live it up decked out in red, white, and blue.

    The Chill Couple

Maybe you started a new job this Summer,  just moved, or simply aren’t in the mood for all the frills this time around. Use your time away from work to spend quality time with your loved ones by making low-key plans. You never know, it just may end up being even more memorable than something over the top. To do this, make dinner at home together (#DIY style) and check out the best spots in your area to watch the fireworks. If this doesn’t sound like your jam, grab a bottle of wine & some refreshments, and head to the park/beach/rooftop for a chill time. Sending good vibes your way.

    The Adventurous Couple

This ain’t your first rodeo. In the past you’ve spent this holiday partying from sunset to sundown, relaxing at the pool, and at your family’s for a BBQ. This year your longing to do something off the beaten path. One suggestion is to map out vineyards near you and spend the day hopping around to different wineries. Nothing sounds like summertime more than sipping on some rose and taking some insta worthy pics.

    The Long-Distance couple

Although nothing beats in-person plans with your loved one, there are ample ways to still seize the day. Luckily for you, the year is 2019 and not 1777 (the first year Independence Day was celebrated). A nice idea is to order some of your favorite take out, crack a cold one and hit call on FaceTime to your special someone. Have him/her virtually show you the firework show they are at! Or…invite you best gal pals to a BBQ and smores by the fire pit. Cheeseburgers and melted marshmallows are sure to cure any melancholy you have from being apart from your bae.
