Healthy Habits for You and Your Partner

Do you know when you’re sitting on the toilet and scrolling through your Instagram and see a video with an elderly couple talking about how they’ve been married for 50+ years? How somehow they’ve cracked “the code” to a long, healthy, and fulfilling marriage?

And you’re sitting there thinking, “how the f— did they do that?”

Those people are my heroes because while marriage is a beautiful experience, it is undoubtedly difficult to keep afloat sometimes. Some days, you have calm waters and a relaxing sea breeze, and others are filled with storms and waves ready to drown you.

There are simple strategies you can engage in helping maintain a healthy relationship. Here are some of our favorite small habits that will make a huge difference.

     1. Set in Motion Your Emotion

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Being emotionally connected to your partner is far more important than being physically connected to them (AKA sex). If you’re in it for the long-run, then establishing an emotionally connect is very, very important. According to Marriage, creating this bond will not only strengthen your communication skills, but will also help build respect, better sex, and a sense of security.

    How to build that connection?

Just don’t keep any feelings from your partner. If there are any problems, never shoo them to the side. Always talk about how you feel and get it out in the open. Don’t let the work-life dominate your relationship; always have one day of the week dedicated to your partner. Just because you’re married doesn’t mean you can’t get out there and have fun.

    2. A T-Rex was Once an Egg

This was my grandpapa’s way of saying, “the little things matter, you dipshit.”

I can’t speak for all women, but when my husband sends me a hearty text with a bunch of kissing emojis, I smile like a bumbling buffoon. We’ve only been married for three years, but it still gets to me. His job requires a ton of physical labor so the fact that he found the time to shoot me a message just reminds me of why I married this guy in the first place.

    via GIPHY

It doesn’t have to be a text. It could be buying them lunch, surprising them at work, sending them flowers, cooking them dinner, and leaving post-it notes with flirty messages all over the house.

The little things keep the sparks flying, trust me.

    3. Communicate EVERYTHING

By everything, I do mean the good, the bad, and the ugly. As a married couple, we always want the best for each other, and whenever something grand happens, we tell each other right away.

But what about those difficult conversations that we would rather not talk about? It could be stress, body weight, anxiety, car troubles, and even a pile of unpaid bills. The conversations that are a must have are usually the ones we don’t want to discuss at all.

If you’re having trouble starting a difficult conversation with your partner, Very Well Mind has a wonderful article full of incredible advice and helpful tips.

    4. Knowing When You’re in the Wrong

Me: “I would like to buy a Y.”

    Pat: “There are three Y’s.”

Me: Is it “I’m Sorry You Feel That Way”?

    Your relationship is not perfect.

Fights will happen where you will argue and cry and yell. When you are the one at fault in an argument, don’t apologize in a way that makes your partner feel that their emotions are irrelevant (refer to quote above). Please don’t be that dumb.

You always want to be empathic when apologizing. You need to recognize that you’re in the wrong and let your partner know that you will change your behavior and fix your mistakes. Unsolved arguments lead to more complications and buried emotions. That’s uncharted territory, and we do not want to go there.

    Dedicating Time for Each Other

I know it doesn’t need to be said and you should be dedicating time for your partner every day. Unfortunately, life gets in the way, and sometimes, we’re too busy even to call to say ‘hello.’

Planning to see a movie, going for a stroll in the park, visiting some close friends, and even cuddling are great ways to show your partner you’re there and you care.

  • Financial Tips as a New Married Couple

Financial Tips as a New Married Couple

You know that part in every wedding ceremony where the priest or rabbi or best friend goes, “…to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health…” and you’re standing there thinking “please God, the richer and health part sounds amazing, let’s go with that”.

I’ve been there, you’ve been there. Let’s be honest, here.

It boggles me when people compare marriage to a trap because it only feels that way if you let it. Yes, marriage is a compromise, and you need to give it your all, blah blah blah. I’m not here to play the marriage counselor.

Marriage is an incredible experience that requires you and your partner to share everything you have, physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially.

    via GIPHY

So let’s take a look at that last part there.

Money management between spouses is a heated topic and will 99.9% of the time in an argument and someone sleeping on the couch. Incorporating your partner’s finances into your own is a difficult step that will take time, effort and a lot of understanding. Before marriage, you were both individuals spending money; however, you wanted.

But now, you need to figure out how to balance that checkbook and develop new money-saving habits. Here are some tips to help you get started.

    1. Talk About It

Having the “money talk” with your partner is like having the sex talk with your teenager. You don’t want to discuss it, but eventually, it needs to be out in the open. In every relationship, there’s always someone who is the CEO of money management. They deal with the store receipts, the bills, the spending, the taxes, and so on. Even if financing isn’t your strength, one of you needs to take on the role to keep track of what’s going on in your household money-wise.

Or should I say, Pennywise, haha.

    via GIPHY

Once you figure out who’s in charge, it’s easier to talk about setting goals, how much money can be spent, and where that money should be spent.

    2. Hold Yourself Account-able

So how are we doing this? Are we each going to have separate bank accounts? Joint account? An emergency fund?

When we first got married, my husband made the horrible choice to trust me enough to join our accounts. Boy, did that come back to bite him in the ass. Everyone has a way to deal with their emotions, and mine happens to be retail therapy, so don’t judge me.

Long story short, to teach me a lesson, he eventually created two separate accounts. Thanks to my excessive (but necessary) spending at Williams-Sonoma, I led my marriage into a financial crisis in just the first year. I was still spending the way I was when I was single.

You need to figure out what will work best for your particular situation. If you feel like the right thing to do is open a joint account, and both contribute to saving money, then go ahead and do that. If you feel like your partner is an impulsive buyer, and separate accounts will benefit you, then go ahead and do that.

    via GIPHY

No matter what you choose to do, you need to agree on the monthly expenses: groceries, produce, electricity, gas, etc. These things are non-negotiable.

    3. You Can’t Own a Jet if You’re in Debt

Even though I was the big spender in the relationship, my husband was the one who had more debt coming into the marriage. Having a massive debt will affect your chances of obtaining credit in your future. This will impact you when it comes to applying for a mortgage, buying a car/house, getting a job, and even buying a phone!

This is why you should consider paying off the debt together.

Do you need to pay for everything all at once? Of course not. Set up a plan that will prioritize what debt needs to be paid first. I know paying off someone’s debt, even your partner’s, doesn’t sound so hot, but there’s no way to tackle this alone.

The National Debt Relief has some greater starter tips to help you take your first steps.

    4. Insurance Coverage

Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.

    via GIPHY

That was relevant, don’t fight me. We’ve got life, car, home, health, renter’s, and travelers insurance. It’s always best to know what type of insurance you and your partner have. After marriage, you might want to figure out what insurance to purchase together and which ones to keep separate. Some employers have insurance coverage in their plan so make sure to check yours out. For more information on how to find affordable health care insurance, check out Haven Life for further information.

    5. Goals

What’s the point in saving money if you can’t spend it? Always set a goal to help motivate you to spend your money wisely. Is there a particular restaurant you’ve had your eye on that’s a bit pricey? An island you want to visit? A house on the market? When you have a motivation, you’re more likely to be wise with your savings. Stay on track and figure out how much you need to save every week (or month) for achieving your goal.

Remember, it’s not going to be easy in the beginning, but practice makes progress, and progress makes perfect!

  • Winter Honeymoon Spots

    Winter Honeymoon Spots

When I hear the word honeymoon, my mind automatically wanders to white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters, and drinking rum out of a coconut. And of course, lots of sexy time.

Hey, it is a honeymoon, after all!

Even though most honeymoons are spent somewhere tropical, there are thousands of winter wonderland locations that fit the just married getaway profile! Leave your bathing suits (I know, I’m sorry) at home and pack up your snow boots and fur jackets, here are some of most beautiful places to spend your winter honeymoon.

    Riffelalp Resort, Switzerland

    Tripadvisor

Yes, of course, the first thing on my list is Switzerland. Known for their edible chocolate gold and second longest life expectancy. Riffelalp Resort is located at an altitude of 2,222 meters within the ski region of Zermatt. It’s one of the highest rated and well-known ski resorts in Switzerland. The 5-star hotel is praised for its majestic interior decor, friendly staff, and breathtaking views (beautiful mountains including the Matterhorn). In addition to the luxurious suites, there is an outdoor pool, child care services, spas/saunas, and a rooftop lounge.

For more information about this delightful location, click here.

    Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia

    Columbia Valley Pioneer

Something we can all agree on? Canada is a must see for any travel purposes. The second largest country in the world holds some of the most beautiful landscapes and scenery including the Rocky Mountains, Niagara Falls, and Old Montreal.

Fairmont Hot Springs is perched on the slopes of the British Columbian Rocky Mountains and overlooks Purcell Mountains. What’s more romantic than hot springs? Hot Springs and a golf course, obviously. It’s time to hit the slopes and immerse yourself in Canada’s largest natural mineral hot springs! So whether you want to hit the spa, the trail, or simply cuddle up in front of a lit fire enjoying a glass of fine wine, this resort holds much promise and unforgettable views.

The Manor on Golden Pond, New England

    Kayak

Are you looking for something more country? This New England resort is the perfect romantic getaway. I know when you first read the name, you’d think it was named after a New York’s Times best-selling novel. You got to admit, it’s an odd name, but this turn of the century manor sure caught my attention.

This luxurious country inn is located at the top of Shepherd’s Hills in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Their specials include a romance- honeymoon package that includes a full country breakfast each morning, spa lunch with champagne, and a 7-course menu tasting in their Van Horn dining room.

    Lake Placid Lodge, New York

    Tripadvisor

Five stars, lakeside, rustic elegance, burning fireplaces, cozy mornings, and most importantly, fantastic food. When the lake is frozen solid in the winter, there are tons of activities to do! You can choose from ice skating to ice fishing to cozying up near an outdoor fireplace eating smores and drinking hot chocolate. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, you can climb aboard a dog sled and get pulled around Mirror Lake and view all the attractions this place has to offer.

    Saariselka, Finland

    The Globe and Mail

I saved the best and personal favorite for last. If you want to create memories that will last a lifetime and experience mother nature like never before, Finland is where it’s at. Among the several activities that include hiking trails, snowmobile safaris, and ski resorts, Saariselka is known for its incredible views of the Northern lights. To gain the full experience, make sure to head over to Igloo Village Kakslauttanen so you can stay in your own private glass igloo. Also known as The Wedding Chamber, this traditional earth lodge offerers the happy couple a “cozy love nest” and some igloos come equipped with a private sauna and heated outdoor jacuzzi! Imagine watching the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed with your partner cuddled up next to you. Finland, you win this round!

  • How to Keep Your Relationship in the Honeymoon Stage

How to Keep Your Relationship in the Honeymoon Stage

You did it! You made it past the stresses of planning the wedding and celebrated your magical day! You are now settling into your roles as a married couple. Now many couples start to worry that the newlywed spark will begin to fade. You’ve heard the many myths of what your relationship transitions into after the beloved ‘honeymoon stage’ comes to an end, and that can start to weigh on your mind!

Although each relationship is very different and with various needs, holding on to these 4 core practices will help to keep that spark alive!

Go all in with the little things

With every relationship, wooing your partner is always going to be important. I mean who doesn’t love walking into a room full of roses, just for you? However, those can only happen every so often, we aren’t made of money! Taking the trash out, sending them a sweet text during their workday, or even buying their favorite coffee creamer will show your partner that you’re thinking of them!

Add some mystery or you’ll be history!

When you get married, it can feel as if you know everything about your significant other. From their biggest fear, to how they prefer their toast in the morning. As wonderful as this comfortability is, predictability does not get our juices flowing! Break your everyday schedule to go on an adventure, buy a new and sexy bra to sleep in, or even decide to turn off your internet for a week and just live in the moment. Break free from the mundane and typical schedule to keep each other on your toes!

    via GIPHY

Never underestimate the power of personal space

For some couples, this will be the first time they are living together! And this can bring on a whole new set of challenges. Don’t get me wrong, waking up next to the love of your life every morning will be amazing, but we all need some time for ourselves! Spend quality time reading a book, or maybe starting a cooking class. By the time you get home, you’ll be jumping into each other’s arms!

    Listen up!

That last bit of wisdom to give would be to just be present! Listen to what your significant other has to say, and show them that you care. Listening isn’t an activity for you to just wait for your turn to speak, hear their point of view and actively respond to what they have to say. This is something that should be practiced every day!

Please share your personal tips and tricks below!

  • Indoor Activities for Rainy Days

    Indoor Activities for Rainy Days

One of the downsides of growing up in Southern CA is that we didn’t get much rain. We would experience light showers, but it was never so intense so that we had to stay inside. My childhood consisted of several trips to Venice beach and so many Disneyland visits to the point where I got tired of it. Yes, the happiest place on earth became the most dreaded place on earth for me.

It wasn’t until I got hitched that I started to come up with indoor activities for my partner and me. Rain or shine, my husband wouldn’t leave the house unless it was work related. This took a significant toll on me considering I’m such an extrovert and need my daily dose of outdoors.

    via GIPHY

    So what did I do?

That’s right; I made a list. Because lists are fantastic and whoever invented them needs to be worshipped like a god.

Here are your indoor activities for rainy (or sunny) days!

    Movies Marathon

Harry Potter. Boom, there’s your movie marathon idea. I joke, but seriously, it’s the first thing that comes to mind.

If you’re a movie person, it’s time to fire up that VCR (people still use those, right)? Load up on your favorite snacks and grab your favorite person, even if that person is you. It’s time to cuddle up under your Spongebob wool blanket and watch your favorite films.

Don’t forget the popcorn. It’s not a movie marathon unless you’ve eaten three buckets of popcorn by the end of each film.

Read a Book (or maybe two or three)

Anybody else have a shelf full of books they haven’t even started reading yet? Yup, that’s me. The guilt engulfs me every time I watch Game of Thrones for the bazillion time. You’d think I would have at least read the books because of my obsession with the series.

    via GIPHY

But sadly, I am not wired that way.

A good book, a cup of tea or coffee, and a comfortable armchair are all you’ll need to have the perfect rainy day.

    Spoil Yourself

Two words. Spa day. I mean, why not? Everything can be made at home! The face and hair masks, foot soak, bath bomb, and even your infused (ok, spiked) drink. Here you will find all the DIYs you need to pamper yourself!

Turn Up the Heat (In the Kitchen)

I’m just going to go ahead and say it. I’m a monster in the kitchen.

And by a monster, I do mean everything’s a competition for me. Even if there is no competition at all, I compete with myself.

Self-driven is the word you’re looking for here. Pretending that I’m on Iron Chef is the only sure way to guarantee five-star food and a burnt/cut finger/hand. But you have to admit; time flies while you’re in Gordon Ramsay mode. It’s true what they say. You are your own worst critic.

    via GIPHY

    Remodel your Home!

You finally have an excuse to move things around. If you have some portraits you want to hang, some carpets you want to lay out, or some DIYs you want to show off, now’s the time to do it. Let’s be honest, if you don’t get it done now, you never will.

    ….and 5,6,7,8!

Got a Wii? Time to have a dance-off. If not, YouTube choreography videos and learn all the moves to Single Ladies. Hey, you never know when you need to break out in dance, and what says “I know what I’m doing” more than Beyonce?

    Answer:

    via GIPHY

The list goes on and on. You can try painting, building a fort, have a scavenger hunt, online shopping, writing a novel, or something as simple as baking cookies. No matter what you choose to do, just make sure you’re not sitting around all day!

  • Top 5 Places To See This Holiday Season

Top 5 Places To See This Holiday Season

Whether you’re planning on staying home for the holidays or wanting to escape to some exotic location, everything around us is a constant reminder that a new year is upon us. With the streets being decorated and everyone carrying a red cup filled with something cinnamon or pumpkin infused. Everyone is completely engrossed in preparing for the holidays or getting ready to book with an airline that’s offering a great deal.

Whether you choose a warm Christmas, a cold Christmas, or even no Christmas, here are the places you need to see this holiday season.

    via GIPHY

    Nuremberg, Germany

What do CNN, Business Insider, and Forbes all have in common? They all agree that Nuremberg will not only warm your heart but create some of the best memories of your life. Known as Germany’s “Christmas City,” Nuremberg is infamous for its Christmas market, AKA Christkindlesmarkt (try saying that three times), that sets its stalls right in the middle of town.

The people of this fantastic town come together and sell homemade ornaments, wooden figures, sweet gingerbread, and the delicious aroma of food and spices fill the night air. Holiday music, twinkling lights, and a possible snowfall that will make you feel like you’re in a fairy winter wonderland.

    New York, New York

Does anyone else read “New York, New York” and immediately start singing the classic Frank Sinatra song?

    No? Is it just me?

I find it so strange when I hear that people are trying to get out of the city when the holidays are just right around the corner. It’s the most wonderful time of the year after all and what’s more wonderful than Christmas in New York?

    via GIPHY

The Big Apple is filled with incredible historical landmarks that all get a makeover for the holidays. New York is known for its tree lighting ceremonies,  Triumph Hotels Holiday Window Walking Tour, botanical gardens, ice skating at Bryant Park, Central Park, and so much more.

Many places around the world get a makeover for the holidays, but New York is one of those places that seems to capture the soul of Christmas.

    Vienna, Austria

Pack up your gloves and fur boots because once you know that magic that is Vienna, you will want to add it to your bucket list of places to see. Vienna is quickly growing to be one of the most popular destinations for tourists in the holidays. Vienna holds their Christmas Market from mid-November till New Years.

The market is held in Schonbrunn Palace and is one of the attractions you cannot miss.

If you get sick of the cold, you can always go for a good craft beer as Vienna is known for its famous breweries. If beer’s not your thing, you can always visit the Imperial Butterfly House.

    Sounds fancy, right?

All you gotta do is sit there, watch the butterflies, and enjoy your natural surroundings.

    Tromso, Norway

    Two words. Northern Lights.

I feel like people from Norway have Norway on their list of places to see. There’s one thing you need to know about Norwegians, and that is that they love their Christmas holiday. On November 26th, the sun sets in Norway, and you will not see it again until January 21st.

    via GIPHY

    Dead. Serious.

This will not only give the city’s holiday makeover a chance to shine because it will be complete darkness (known as polar night).

This sets the stage for the flickers of blue, pink, orange, and yellow light that will flicker across the night sky. It’s like the sunset but in a pitch black sky. The Northern Lights are one of Mother Nature’s most miraculous sights, and if you’re lucky, you might see them.

Other than all the Christmas markets and mouthwatering food that will be held at the town’s square, there will also be a giant Christmas tree that will light up the city and people’s mood!

There will be dancing, singing, and let’s face it, lots of drinking.

    Aruba

Aruba?? Why’s it even on this list?

Well, because unfortunately, not everyone likes the cold. Some people like sandy beaches, and warm weather, and suntan lotion. I was raised in California, so I kind of get it.

Other than being known as one of the safest islands in the Caribbean, Aruba is also famous for its amazing sunny weather all year round. Their crystal blue waters are some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

    Tripsavvy

This little island is filled with rich culture, kind people, killer waves, and endless adventures. If that’s not enough to sell you, wait till you try their food! Because Aruba is so diverse, your taste buds will get a taste of Italy, Columbia, Dutch, and so much more.

It’s always bikini season here! Nothing to do but tan up and live it up.

  • Partner Moving In? Here’s What You Need To Know

Partner Moving In? Here’s What You Need To Know

First comes the engagement, then comes the marriage and then comes the moving in together. It’s not easy sharing your home with another person, even if that person is your significant other.

I mean, this is your safe place. Your sanctuary!  Everything has its place, and you can’t imagine having to shuffle things around just to fit in some of your partner’s stuff. But hey, you said it: “till death do us part”. It’s going to happen sooner or later! Here’s how you can cope with it.

    Communication is key

Here’s what to keep in mind. Needless to say, it’s pretty obvious that your taste and your partners may not exactly line up perfectly. It’s like the classic Ella Fitzgerald song, you like tomato, and they like tomahto. But hopefully, you won’t need to call the whole thing off because, in the end, this is just another step that will bring you closer to building your new life together.

As they start moving in, try not to make any faces (as tempting as that is) at their items of choice and always keep honesty priority. Of course, you can’t point at their armchair and claim that it is “the ugliest thing” you have ever seen.

    That won’t work. Trust me.

Eh, you live and you learn.

Instead, express how you feel and help them understand why this piece of furniture doesn’t go with the rest of the room. You don’t want to end up with three different colored couches and a red plaid leg rest. There will be a lot more furniture, but still, the same amount of space so choose carefully.

    Speaking of choosing…

How do you calmly and gently settle on what stays and what goes? I don’t care how big of a hoarder you or your partner are because at the end of the day, there’s going to be a lot less furniture and I’m sorry to say that some of yours will have to go! One way to figure what to keep is to both agree that you love it. For instance, you both really enjoy the coffee table from Pottery Barn, so you both decide to keep it. You can always pick a few things that are dear to you and are utterly irreplaceable. It could be a family heirloom or something you’ve had since your college days.

And no, you can’t pick everything in the room, that’s not how it works. By both taking turns saying what stays and what goes, you’ll find out more about each other’s style and figure everything out together.

Prepare for trouble, and make it double

Ok, so now you got two mattresses, two (or three) couches, two tables, two coffee machines…you get the idea. In this scenario, you can always pick depending on how much space is available. The size of the item is important because now it will be serving two people. If your home is spacious, you can then check the condition and quality of the item. Is it worn out, is it new? Can it last a few more months, let alone years?

4 hours and six arguments later

Hey, I didn’t say this was going to go smoothly.

At this point, you both have probably disagreed on…a lot? Yeah, a lot sounds good. You’re probably thinking one of you has to give and no way in hell it’s going to be you!

Relax, what if I told you there’s a way where you both can be (slightly) satisfied?

    BUT HOW?

You might not like it but here are some options:

    1. You let your partner have it their way. It’s simple; you love them so much that you’re willing to let them keep their foosball table or that weird painting of puppies they got for sale at Michaels.

Hey, it happens, I’ve been there.

    1. The 3 Re-s. Repaint, remodel and recover. You might not like an item because of its color or how old it looks, but somewhere deep down you’d be willing to accept it if were retouched.

    Hey, another Re-.

    1. You both don’t agree, so you sell, donate, or burn it. The last one is a little too intense but I’ve seen things…

This is your last resort because if you can’t keep your teardrop table lamp, then neither can they. Go big or go home!

Kidding, that’s an entirely different article.

    1. Shopping! Buy something entirely new that you both agree on.

Before the big move, you probably had the perfect vision to make your home the perfect home. Granted, you won’t say eye to eye on everything, but always remember what led you here in the first place. This is going to be your new home and your children’s first home! Memories are just waiting to be created.

The beginning will undoubtedly be rough, but what beginning isn’t? Believe me when I say, in a few months, it won’t even matter and you’ll just be glad you’ve got the love of your life laying down right there beside you.

  • Purchases Newlyweds Should Protect

    Purchases Newlyweds Should Protect

As newlyweds, you and your spouse will most likely be making important financial decisions and investments, many of these for the first time. As unromantic as it may sound, finances can play a huge role in how successful and happy your marriage will be. It’s no secret that arguing over money puts a huge strain on a relationship, but understanding how to protect these big purchases can help start your marriage off on the right foot. Here are four investments that newlyweds should protect along with a few tips on how to do so.

    Your new engagement/wedding ring(s)

An engagement ring is a special, yet expensive investment. Putting an insurance policy on your beloved symbol of love may sound unromantic, but it’s important to make sure that your ring is protected forever. While the sentiment behind your ring is priceless, jewelry insurance will allow you to replace your ring in the event that something happens to it. Keep in mind that just because you may already have a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy doesn’t mean that all of your jewelry is automatically covered, so be sure to look into insurance options shortly after the ring is purchased. If you’re not sure where to start, talk to your jeweler. Many online jewelers, including Blue Nile, not only offer an extraordinary collection of engagement rings, but also provide information on how to insure jewelry directly on their website.

    Your honeymoon

Your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime trip filled with everlasting memories with your new spouse, but it’s also a huge financial investment. It’s important to plan ahead for a big trip like a honeymoon, but more time before a trip also means more time in which something can go wrong. While travel insurance can’t stop unpredictable events from disrupting your honeymoon, it can protect your investment. Medical emergencies, lost baggage, and tropical storms are just a few occurrences that can be protected by travel insurance. While planning your honeymoon, be sure to explore travel insurance options to see what is covered and help make your planning process less stressful.

    Your HOME

Many newlywed couples look forward to buying their first home together shortly after walking down the aisle. From finding the perfect house to picking out decor and doing renovations, there is so much that goes into making your new house feel like home. If you and your spouse are buying a house or have already made the big purchase, consider investing in a home security system. Homes without security systems are 2.7 times more likely to be targeted by burglars. This shows that the mere presence of an alarm system is enough, in most cases, to protect your home and its occupants from a break-in. On top of that, homeowners typically receive a 10-20% discount on their homeowner’s insurance by having a functioning home alarm system installed. Companies like SimpliSafe, offer easy to install wireless home security systems that allow you to keep a close eye on your home no matter where you are.

    SHARED bank account

While this isn’t necessarily a purchase, many newlywed couples choose to combine their finances after saying “I do.” This can simplify the process of paying your bills and allows you to have a better idea of your current financial situation. For many, this is the first time sharing a bank account with another person so it’s important to talk with your partner to define your financial goals and create a plan before merging your accounts. Each partner should come prepared with a list of their accounts, debts, and a copy of his/her credit score. Make it a habit to repeat this every few months. Rather than one partner taking the lead on handling the money, both partners should know exactly what’s going on financially to stay on top of bills and paying off debt.

  • How to Survive Your First Thanksgiving Dinner as the Host

How to Survive Your First Thanksgiving Dinner as the Host

You’ve done everything in your power to avoid it. You’ve come up with excuses, little white lies, and even used up your “I won’t be in town” card more than once even though we both know you ordered in Pizza Hut and watched Game of Thrones for the tenth time.

But the time has come, and you’ve been selected to host this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. One of the most important family gatherings of the year where relatives you haven’t seen for months are coming to take a seat at your table to commemorate this luscious holiday.

    first time hosSo now what?

Well, the first step is to pour yourself a glass of whiskey to calm the nerves because my friend…

Can’t Spell Menu without Me N U…and Aunt Mildred Who has a Stuffing Recipe that Will Make Your Taste Buds Dance

Turkey. The centerpiece of your table. It needs to be large enough to satisfy all your guests and cooked to perfection. Otherwise, you’ll be incorporated into everyone’s conversations for the rest of the year as “the one who ruined Thanksgiving.”

    Don’t be that relative.

Don’t feel like you need to prepare a whole menu alone. So if Aunt Mildred believes her stuffing recipe is what’s going to be the talk of the table, then so be it. This is a potluck holiday, which means all your friends and family should all prepare a dish and bring it along. That way, you won’t be feeling overwhelmed to do everything alone.

Find Out What Recipes Can Be Made The Day Before, And Make Them!

If you’re a busy bee and you’re losing your sanity thinking about how you are going to manage hosting while working a full-time job, there are some steps you can take to ease that weight off your shoulders.

Anything that can be reheated such as pies or casseroles can be made and frozen until Thanksgiving Day!

Here is a list of food that can be made ahead to save you some time.

Set the Table, the Table Rules, and Ban Politics Talk

Once you know how many people are attending, it’s best to set the table the night before. That includes silverware, cups, utensils, and napkins. If you want to add candles or any decoration, this is the time to do it.

    Why table rules?

Uh, because you don’t want your Uncle Jim and Cousin Luke going at it regarding topics that are just not convenient for a family dinner. Believe me; nobody wants to discuss immigration laws and how they’ve changed in the past four years when you can be laughing at inappropriate jokes and predicting Jon Snow’s fate in season 8.

If it gets too intense and things spiral out of control, calmly request that they take it outside.

Have Appetizers and Drinks Available in Case the Turkey Needs More Time

If you’re a diehard chef, you probably already got appetizers covered. But if you don’t, then don’t worry. Store bought will work just fine, I promise. Keep in mind that Thanksgiving dinner is a huge meal and there will be plenty of leftovers.

Pass out some drinks to your company to keep them occupied until dinner is ready.

What’s Missing…Other than Your Aunt from Your Mother’s Side Whose Travelling the Globe in Order to “Find Herself”?

Listen, when it comes to that “one last thing,” and whether it’s a pie or bread rolls, don’t feel ashamed to buy it from your local grocery store. If this is what will help you feel more relaxed, then let it be. When you attempt to do everything from scratch, you will not only despise Thanksgiving, but everyone that is present.

We Like Lists Because We Don’t Want to Die

Wise words from a wise man.

Here’s the thing about lists: They’re pretty much the most amazing thing on this planet.

    Think I’m joking? I’m not.

Here is an example of a list that can help make this day less… You can keep it in plain sight so you can always see it. They make matters more orderly, and every time you complete a task, you can check it right off.

    Most Importantly, Don’t Freak Out!!

My mother took down all the windows in her house the year she was hosting. Believe me; nobody noticed the spotless windows and how squeaky clean they were except for her.

If kids are attending, plan a few activities, or you can even involve them in helping with the setup and clean up.

This is your four day weekend so that grants you the right to overdrink, overeat, and oversleep. We have to overdo it on this day, you guys, as it is our patriotic duty.  Once you’re done with the dinner and everyone’s settled down, take turns on why you are thankful.

Really, it’s a day where we get to remember how blessed and lucky we are and how so many people around the world don’t have the privileges we do.

Once everyone gets up to leave and thanks to you for a great dinner, you can cuddle up under your blankets and convince yourself that you will never host another party again.

Other than expanding one’s horizon, traveling is important because it provides you with a better perspective on life, on how other people are living. Cappadocia, Turkey

Hot air balloon rides, underground cities, hotel caves, magical sunrises from rooftops.

Known for its magical “fairy chimneys,” Cappadocia attracts people from all over the globe because of its unique moonlike geological features. There are 36 underground cities here in Cappadocia so you can be certain your stay will be unpredictable, educational, and exciting. You and your partner can go on a one-hour hot air balloon ride just so you can see for yourself why Cappadocia is referred to as “another planet on earth.”

Whether it’s hiking, biking, camping, or just sightseeing, this is the place that will leave a mark on your soul, and you will never forget it.

    Great Wall of China

We know the Great Wall of China as…the Great Wall of China.

It’s a wall that goes on for over 5000 miles so one can’t help but think what is there to do other than walking? We don’t really get the chance to see what goes on this five thousand mile wonder but I can tell you now hiking isn’t the only thing you get to experience. There are several activities including walking at night, camping, have a picnic, running a marathon, and taking a roller coaster cart down those steep hills.

Can you do all that on a wall? Yes! How else are you going to gain the full China experience? I mean when you tell someone you’re going to visit China, it’s obvious 99% of the time you’re going to see the wall, but how often do you get to say “I camped on the Great Wall of China and ran a marathon” ??

Read more about the activities here.

    Macchu Picchu

A name that is known all around the world. This reserved and ancient destination is set in the Andes Mountains in Peru and was home to the Incan people. For all my history majors, this is a must for your bucket list. A mysterious and lost city built of stones and rocks? It’s every archaeologist’s dream! Other than the sacred underground temples and several trails, there are llamas everywhere (WHAT?! A Llama?! He’s supposed to be dead!).

And let’s be real, who doesn’t love those? Make sure to stop for some Peruvian food before hiking up the mountain! It’s a long way to the top, but that’s how you know the view’s going to be breathtaking.

    Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

I read New Zealand, and I immediately thought of lakes, botanical gardens, and mountains covered with snow. The thing is, you never really hear about New Zealand, it’s like the middle child who sits there in the corner and minds its own business while everyone else starts shit and builds walls. Waitomo is known for its extensive underground cave systems and its glowworm caves.

    You read right, glowworms.

They inhabit these caves, and you get to ride in a boat underground so you can see this.

Now if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can try black water rafting. There’s more than one way to explore these underground water caves, and you’ll agree that they are indeed a sight to behold. Once you get above ground, you can go for walks, have a cup of coffee at a cafe, snap a pic of the beautiful Marokopa Falls, and even head to see some of the country’s rarest birds.

    Mosquito Bay

Mother Nature strikes again. Honestly, just when you thought you’ve seen it all, here on the island of Puerto Rico is a bioluminescent bay (Isla de Vieques). Don’t let the name scare you off, because this is one of the most beautiful destinations that will end up on your bucket list. There’s bioluminescent plankton living in these waters that cause a chemical reaction and phosphoresces when your hand or anything else hits the water. Basically, the water glows like Rapunzel’s hair.

This is an experience that will leave you so breathless that the only way to define the adventure is magical.

If Pixar’s Up has taught me one thing, it’s that adventure is out there. So what are you waiting for? It’s adventure time! And I don’t mean the show.
