Eight Things to Do Every Day to Keep Your Relationship Strong

Before I had my first real long term relationship, everyone around me always had a habit of letting me in on know how relationships work. They require hard work, a ton of energy, constant arguments, and more than a few sleepless nights.

You can guess what that did to my sense of commitment…

    via GIPHY

But, you live, and you learn, and you realize that other people’s relationship status does not dictate your own.

If you’re ever lucky enough to find that one person to dedicate your life to, you’re going to realize that you will need constant maintenance to keep your connection secure and healthy. From what I’ve learned, maintaining a relationship is very similar to planting a seed. You will need to continually take care of it, provide it with enough nourishment, and love in order for it to grow.

With that being said, there are numerous ways (countless really) to keep a relationship sturdy and robust.

Start Your Day The Right Way

It sounds simple enough, right? That’s because it truly is.

    via GIPHY

If you live with your partner, then you know that some nights, we tend to fall asleep furious at each other. It could be the result of any circumstances that might have triggered you both during your day.

In an interview with Kyle Benson, psychologist Susan David explains how “When people bottle, they are pushing aside their emotions, and their partner can often feel that they aren’t present—that they aren’t authentic or vulnerable in the relationship.” It’s commonly understood how unhealthy bottling emotions can be, primarily when it’s between two people. By starting your day with intimacy such as sex, cuddling, pillow talk, the bond linking two people strengthens.

    The Little Things Matter

It’s incredibly common for lust and passion to wear off as a relationship elongates. It’s the brutal truth.

    via GIPHY

In the beginning, it was everyday sex, chocolates, flowers, date nights, and so much more. Now, this is not to say it dies off completely, but there’s a noticeable difference. Of course, several factors are involved when it reaches this point. Therapist Daniel Tomasulo explains how “the demise often involves thwarted expectations that, over time, erode the connection. Love that was once flourishing becomes unrequited, resulting in less engagement, simulation, and satisfaction.”

So how do we avoid this? Well, for once, it’s healthy to keep the element of surprise present in the relationship! For example, flowers on a random day, date night at your favorite restaurant, trying a new sex move, or even bringing home a new Pyrex pan for your partner!

    Hey, worked on me.

    Tell Them About Your Day

    That’s it. That’s literally it.

    via GIPHY

You sit with your partner wherever they may be. You’re drinking a hot cup of chocolate, it’s snowing outside, The Office is playing on Netflix, you’re wrapped up in a blanket probably designed by Martha Stewart, and your partner is curled up under your arms. So take this time to ask them how their day was, or tell them about your day. Tell them about a new book you found, a show you’re interested in, or a recipe you’re excited to try out.

    Show Appreciation

    Observe. And learn.

I appreciate your cooking. I appreciate your presence. I appreciate your love, your care, your humbleness, your generosity, your smile, your laughter, your messages, your calls. I appreciate you.

    via GIPHY

But it’s not just stating your appreciation, it’s showing it. It’s taking care of your partner, showing them how much you love them, and reminding them how much they mean to you. Easy, right?

    Show Affection

Affection is not only based on your sex life. There are several ways to show love that include physical, verbal, and emotional. The forms of affection include hugs, touches, massages, listening, and so much more.

    via GIPHY

Marriage and Family therapist Gabrielle Applebury says how “Showing affection in your relationship is an important aspect of maintaining intimacy.” It’s always the little things that make the most significant difference.

    Hit The Gym

Couples that workout together stay together. I personally stand by this statement. The benefits of exercise and the science behind how it affects the human mentality are endless.

    via GIPHY

And yes, you guessed it, it’s an excellent habit to create, especially with your partner. You get the chance to plan your workouts together, stay healthy, and meet your fitness goals!

    Set New Goals Every Day

    Speaking of goals…

Think of how to better not only your relationship but your life together in general. Think about how you are going to propel towards that goal with your significant other. Talk about it, dream about, always discuss it.

    via GIPHY

Emotional Fitness therapist Barton Goldsmith explains how “This alignment is critical for creating harmony and allowing you both to reach your dreams. Once that alignment is secure, there is no limit to how much you can accomplish together.” Forming a goal is a lifetime commitment. By building it with your partner, it strengthens your attachment with each other.

    Share Your Thoughts

I do mean the good, the bad, and the ugly. We are not always going to have healthy thoughts, and that’s ok. The most important thing is to talk about it with your partner. Share everything you think because communication is vital in any relationship.

    via GIPHY

Share what you’re contemplating, have your partner share, discuss, and talk about how you feel towards it all in the end.

  • Fun Fall Activities for Couples

    Fun Fall Activities for Couples

    (And Families!)

It’s incredible how every season comes with its own set of to-do activities. While every season has it’s happy moments; it always feels like fall and winter are the best times to create some fun. Something about the fresh fall air makes you want to either cuddle up at home with a spiced pumpkin latte or head out to the nearest pumpkin patch and enjoy the cinnamon air. While there are hundreds of options to choose from, we’ve picked a few of our favorites that are both family and couple friendly!

    Check them out!

Spend an Evening at the Beach

End of October, beginning of November is when the weather is just perfect for a day to cozy up at the shore. There’s nothing like spending a single evening at the beach with your significant other. Nothing too spontaneous, I promise. Gather up a few blankets, couple pillows, and a tent if you’re feeling bold! There’s nothing like the sound of the waves and the smell of the salt to give you complete tranquillity and lull you to sleep.

    via GIPHY

To especially get the most out of your day, don’t forget to pick up some beautiful shells before you head home. Keep them in a jar to remember this special day.

     Cook a Fall Dinner Together

I know what you’re thinking. What the hell is a “fall dinner?”

Think hearty, whole, and something to warm the belly. Most meals in autumn fall in the category of slow cookers or a one-pan meal, and this is what makes this plan so simple and great. Pumpkins, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, and the entire squash family are in the spotlight at this time of year, so incorporating them into your recipes or as sides is an excellent way to get into the seasonal spirit.

    via GIPHY

    Pumpkin Spiced Latte Hunt

The chain of coffee shops in America is endless. Starbucks is the most recognized for its infamous pumpkin spiced latte that makes its appearance around the colder season. But there is still so much to be bought and tasted!

    via GIPHY

Spend the day with your partner taste testing the pumpkin spiced lattes in your own town coffee shops! Who knows? Maybe you’ll acquire a new, unexpected favorite.

    Read a Book Together

Anyone else feels like reading a book when the air is cooler changes you?

If you will, imagine this: you’re sitting at a family-owned cafe in Paris (or Santa Monica), the streets are quiet, and a drizzle of rain is the only sound surrounding you. You’re sitting with a cup of robust Colombian coffee because you know chai lattes are overrated.

    via GIPHY

You’re reading a book about a boy who stole a painting of a goldfinch. Your partner is waiting at the counter for the chocolate croissant you’ve been craving and wouldn’t stop talking about. You know it’s going to be a fantastic day because one, you’re there with the most precious person in your life, and two, this book has immersed you in its chapters.

You’re wearing the scarf grandma knitted for you two falls ago. It’s a good Autumn day.

    County Fair

Undoubtedly, the most common and exciting fall activity for families and couples alike. If your town doesn’t host a county fair, then the next town closest probably will. What better way to spend the day than hayrides and corn mazes? Plus booths upon booths of delicious food and fried desserts?

    via GIPHY

What more could you want? Fields of apple trees, pumpkin field, face painting, game booths, rides, and so much more! There are so many things to do at the fair that you’ll need to go every day of the week to gain the full experience.

    Have a Disney Movie Marathon

Usually, around this time, Disney broadcasts it’s familiar Halloween films on cable. Even Youtube has full Disney episodes on live throughout the month! If those both don’t work out for you, then Netflix is an excellent choice since there are several Disney films to choose from.

    via GIPHY

Family-friendly films are a great way to spend the night with your loved ones. You can make your snacks at home or keep it simple and pass out buckets of popcorn. You can always bring out sleeping bags (or any blankets) and camp out in the TV room as a bonus!

    Just don’t forget the smores!

    Bring Out Your Artistic Side

With the leaves rapidly changing colors and the weather getting crispier, a lot of people like to linger indoors.

Getting artsy in Autumn is a productive way to spend a family day. You get to go out and collect leaves, pinecones, rocks, and get truly creative. Artsy Crafty Mom has an incredible list of ideas that are bound to keep the family busy and content. Several of these ideas don’t require much and can be framed and hung after you’re finished.

    via GIPHY

This is the perfect activity for those rainy days where the kids are unbelievably bored, and there’s nothing to do!

  • Best Horror Films to Binge Watch This Halloween

Best Horror Films to Binge Watch This Halloween

For the first time ever in my life, Halloween is right around the corner, and I will not be able to host a party, dress up, or go trick or treating. Mother Nature showed my family no mercy this year, and when it seemed like one person was getting better, the next got sick. So yes, I will be sending my Halloween indoors this year, tending to my ill infant and emptying my husband’s throw-up bucket.

    Boo-hoo, I know, it sucks.

Since I am not one to dwell, and getting into the spirit of this holiday is a necessity for me, I have conjured up other plans. It includes chamomile lozenges because it’s the closest I can have to candy and a mug of lemon water.

    via GIPHY

To make sure I don’t feel left out, I’ve decided to spend All Hallow’s Eve rewatching some of the best horror films ever produced. Some are classics, some are new, but one thing they have in common is they’re sure to leave you scared shitless.

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

If you have yet to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, my advice to you is not to watch it alone. I don’t care how tough you are, how emotionally capable you are; it’s not meant to be watched alone.

    via GIPHY

While the movie is based on a true story, it’s really more based on the crimes of the murderer the movie is portraying, Ed Gain. You may recognize him as the cannibal wearing a leather face in the film (great stuff, right?). Gain, who eventually went to the crazy house for being completely insane, would excavate bodies from their graves and make keepsakes out of their skin and bones (furniture, masks). The chainsaw was an added effect by Tope Hooper (the director) and was not used by the actual family.

     The Witch

This story follows a New England family in the mid 17th century after they are banished from their pilgrim community because of their different views on religion. They’re left to fend for themselves in the wilderness where superstitious elements begin to befall upon them. William and Katherine (the parents) build a home and plant crops to survive with their five children. It’s not long before disaster strikes, and their newborn, Sam, vanishes into thin air.

    via GIPHY

As they unsuccessfully look for Sam, Katherine blames her firstborn daughter on all the evil and wrong in their life and slowly descends into insanity. Will the family survive or fall victim to black magic that is unraveled by their sins?

    Don’t Breathe

You’d think robbing a blind guy would be a piece of cake, right?

    via GIPHY

In this edge of your seat thriller, a trio of friends (Rocky, Alex, and Money) make a living by robbing valuables from secured homes and selling them. When Rocky decides to take her sister away from her abusive mother, she and her friends hatch a plan to kidnap an ex-veteran for 300 grand and run away to sunny California. At first, it doesn’t seem like anything could go wrong, but what if there’s more than meets the eye with this Gulf War veteran? Will Rocky get away with the money to fund her dreams? Or did she embark on a nightmare she won’t be able to wake up from?

    It Follows

The plot of this film is relatively simple. If I’m honest, it’s more creepy than scary, but a great addition, nonetheless.

After a brief sexual encounter, Jay Height is suddenly haunted by a walking figure that follows her everywhere she goes. The figure appears as a different person every time, and the only way she can get rid of it is to have sex with someone else. With no one else to see these phantoms but her, Jay sets out to escape from its deadly grasp. Her friends tag along, hoping to help Jay, who they believe is losing her mind. Is there a way out of this curse, or will Jay have to pass it onto the next person in order to survive?

    The Conjuring

After moving into a secluded farmhouse in Rhode Island, the Perron family’s lives become anything but ordinary. They are haunted by nightmares, noises, spirits, and paranormal events. Desperate for help, the Perrons contact Lorraine and Ed Warren to investigate the house. They later discover that a witch who once lived in the house had sacrificed her baby to Satan and had possessed any other mother residing on that land to do the same.

    via GIPHY

As they continue to gather evidence and plan their exorcism, will the Warrens be able to detach the darkness from the Perron family? Or will the whole family be doomed to a life of evil?

    The Sixth Sense

After failing to heal one of his patients, child psychologist Malcolm Crowe decides to take on the case of a troubled eight-year-old boy who is cursed with the visions of the deceased who still walk this earth.

    via GIPHY

Desperately wanting to redeem himself after his ex-patient committed suicide, Crowe is convinced that the little boy is “seeing things”. After spending some time with the boy, Crowe starts to perceive things differently and starts to believe that his patient is seeing dead people who don’t know they’re dead.

Not only was this classic horror/thriller nominated for six Academy Awards, but it was also the highest-grossing movie of 1999! So grab your candy, popcorn, and a buddy! Don’t miss out on these awesome films this spooky season.

  • How to Throw an Adult Halloween Party

How to Throw an Adult Halloween Party

The month of October has finally bestowed itself upon us mere mortals. The month of candy corns, jack-o-lanterns, pumpkin carving, haunted houses, and 20+ visits to the Party City around the corner.

    Yup, it’s all coming together.

The last three months of the year are always the busiest and most stress-inducing months of the year. The holidays all roll up right after one another, and if you’re playing host for any event, then you’ve got your hands full. But before we drown ourselves into endless tasks and sleepless nights, the best night of the year has arrived.

    via GIPHY

Here’s the thing, there was a point in life when we were adults (college parties, sexy Catwoman costumes, blackout drunk), and another point where we became adults adults (marriage, work, children). Responsibilities seem to tally up as we get older. But that doesn’t mean we can’t unleash our inner kid, wear a costume, and eat copious amounts of candy on Halloween.

Hey, if anyone deserves it, it’s you. So whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or attending one, here’s how to keep it memorable and fun.

Invite All Your Witches (And Warlocks)

Being an adult in the modern world is challenging. Now try being a working/parenting/never sleeping adult. It’s laborious keeping a schedule considering there’s so much to get done. Calling or texting all your friends and family is a great way to get your invite across, but why not keep it exciting and send out Halloween invitations instead?

    via GIPHY

It’s a surefire way to get people to come since fewer people are likely to flake with an invitation. If you have any specific requests, rules, or theme for your party, make sure to state them in your message to let people know.

    Let’s All Have Some Skele-fun

What’s the difference between Halloween games when you were a kid and Halloween games now?

Alcohol. At this point, it’s the only thing that makes life fun. But it’s not the only thing.

    via GIPHY

Bobbing for alcohol is a fun twist on bobbing for apples, but instead of water, it’s sangria, and for apples, it’s mini bottles of liquor. If you’ve got a big day planned the next day and you and other adults have kids that are waiting at home, then simpler things such as a costume contest, pumpkin carving contest, and donuts on a string will do the trick.

The goal is to have fun, enjoy yourself, and keep it classy for your friends and family. For more fun Halloween games, click here

Give Them Pumpkin to Talk About

How vital are decorations when it comes to adult parties?

Extremely. If you think I’m coming for your food and skillfully decorated cupcakes, you’re absolutely right, but more importantly, how superior are your home decorating skills? I spend an hour a day on Pinterest (no judging) praising moms for their DIY and decor skills, and now I’m here for yours

    via GIPHY

It’s not always easy, so if it helps, try setting a theme. We’re all adults here, so you don’t have to go all out for this party. Keep it spooky with a splash of chic. Click here to check out some beautiful Halloween decor ideas!

    Boooo-vie Night

There’s bound to be some people at your party that simply do not want to…party.

Hey, it happens, so let’s not overlook it. If you have a spare room, try setting up a TV or projector with movie options that capture the spirit of Halloween. Depending on how many people are attending your party, seating will differentiate. You can choose from couches to lawn chairs and even bean bags. Have a separate table set with spooky snacks for your guests, plus don’t forget to set the mood for the movies (ex. Low lighting, cobwebs, mini pumpkins)!

    Creep it Real

By that, I mean, make sure your guests are comfortable. For most adults, it’s challenging to get away and enjoy a night like this.

    via GIPHY

Personally, I’d go to any adult party just to have some fun regardless of which holiday it is. Make sure you have enough snacks or food for your guests, and music playing in the background is a must (please don’t blast it). Here are a few party ideas to help get you started.

Have a few contests, down a few drinks, laugh till you pee your pants, and enjoy the spookiest night of the year.

Extra note: Halloween is great, but keep in mind the dangers that loom on this spooky night. To make the best of your night, please read these safety guidelines and pass them along to friends and family! Happy Halloween!

  • What to Wear as a Wedding Guest

What to Wear as a Wedding Guest

A wise man once said, “sweatpants, hair ties, chillin’ with no makeup on, that’s when you’re the prettiest, I hope that you don’t take it wrong.” And I didn’t, because that’s my daily look. It could be because I’m a mom, or simply because I’m too lazy and don’t bother to admit it. Hey, we’ll never know. Although Drake’s words of wisdom are tattooed in my head for all the right reasons, I cannot implement them to every event that transpires in my life.

    via GIPHY

    Unfortunately

For example, weddings are celebrations that require you to dress in proper attire according to the theme, setting, or dress code if the couple chooses. For those of us with an acute fashion sense might have it easy, but there are people out there who struggle more than the bride and groom to prep for this day. Those people hold a special place in my heart because they are me. Well, fret no more, for I am here to educate you on what makes the perfect wedding guest attire.

Before we go any further, let’s review what’s a definite no-no on this special day:

    1. Anything you’d wear to the gym (or grocery store) is a no. This includes leggings, sweatpants, crop tops, and believe it or not, leather shorts. I know that’s very specific, but I’ve seen it in action. Please don’t.
    2. Nothing too short (mini-dresses), schoolgirl skirts (you know the ones), extremely exposed clothing, plunging necklines, or neon colors (why would you even…?)
    3. Nothing shiny, sparkly, or bedazzled that might possibly blind the other guests.
    4. No open-toed footwear (sandals, flip-flops). None. It’s not fashion; it’s a catastrophe.
    5. Last but not least, ladies and gentlemen…you cannot wear white. Unless the bride is having a themed wedding and is wearing a red, blue, or yellow dress, then go ahead. If not, then you have no reason to wear white and upstage the couple on their wedding day.

    via GIPHY

Alright, let’s get down to it.

First off, both men and women should be aware if there is a specific theme and location for the wedding they’re attending. Is it a casual beach wedding? Will it be ordained at a church and require formal wear? Or maybe it’s in the backyard of your childhood best friend? Are you aware of the weather on that day, and if so, are you prepared?

When you grasp where the wedding will take place, if it requires a theme, and what season it falls in, you’re three steps closer to attaining the perfect outfit.

Gentleman, I have grown to understand that picking out wedding attire as a guest is exceptionally painful for you. While many people believe that men have it more comfortable, it’s actually the opposite. Women have endless options when it comes to picking something out. The only reason most people believe that men have it easier is because they just need to find a suit.

    via GIPHY

Thanks to the evolution of suits in our modern world, picking out the right outfit is not a simple choice. My Dream Wedding has one of the most practical guides for men in helping them pick their Cinderella suit. Their options vary depending on the wedding instructions. They can choose from a wide assortment that incorporates white/black tie, casual/formal wear, cufflinks, pocket squares, and ties.

Other than the suit itself, men need to find the right footwear. The idea is not to under-dress nor overdress. At least, not to the point where the attention is on you and not the groom. Dark colors for men are usually the go-to for weddings, but specific themes may require you to go for lighter shades.

Oh, and one last thing for men. Casual doesn’t mean wearing jeans with a navy blazer. Clearly, it’s rude, and it shows no effort on your part. The effort you put into your ensemble shows the wedding couple how meaningful this day is to you as well.

    via GIPHY

    Ladies. Where do I start?

First, keep in mind this isn’t your wedding. You’re a guest, so act like one.

People seem to have a misconception when it comes to what a woman can wear to a wedding. A woman’s decisions are not limited to dresses and gowns. Pants are options, so are jumpsuits, and black suits. When attending a wedding, I always ask myself this question when trying anything on: will it attract too much attention? Because if I’m honest, I love being the center of attention, but just not on this day. A line needs to be drawn.

Try going for neutral colors, and if you’re planning on donning a dark color, see if black is acceptable. I’ve received a wedding invitation once that specified no black attire, including the males. Some couples are quite picky when it comes to attire, and not following the dress code can be highly offensive.

    via GIPHY

Obsessing over what to wear as a guest can be mind-numbing, but by sticking to the dress code provided, your options will undoubtedly shorten. Refinery29 has the perfect slideshow to help you determine what to wear.

Remember, this is a personal and memorable day for other people, and they’ve invited you to be a part of it all, so play it safe and create some memories!

  • Top Color Combos for Upcoming Fall Weddings

Top Color Combos for Upcoming Fall Weddings

The Autumn weather is upon us, as well as bridal season. The weather’s cooler, the trees are changing colors, and around sunset, the sky bleeds several distinct colors. It’s romantic, it’s perfect, and the ideal time to host your dream Fall wedding! These weddings consist of vibrant, rustic, and earthy pallets that make for an irresistible setting.

While there are hundreds of colors to choose as your theme, we wanted to save you some time. We scoured the internet for some of the most sought out and most beautifully combined hues for the perfect fall wedding! Check out our top favorites.

Pumpkin, Sage, and Blush (cr: Cosmopolitan)

I know, I know, it’s bad enough it’s made its way into our coffee, and now our weddings?

I have one thing to say to people who are not a fan of pumpkins, and that’s what the heck is wrong with you?

This color plan screams AUTUMN IS OFFICIALLY HERE. But more than that, it’s perfect for an outdoor wedding and blends in with the changing scenario around you. You can add mini pumpkins, hang sage around the tables, use leaves for decorations on cakes and other desserts, and your bridesmaids will have multiple options and still look amazing standing next to each other.

    WEDDINGS BY SHAHRZAD

Cardinal Red and Pineapple (cr: The Knot)

Have you noticed that all significant restaurant chains (Mcdonalds, Subway, In-N-Out) maintain yellow in their logos? It’s because yellow captures the eye, and what better bolder color to pair it off with more than red? They’re both vivid, beautiful, eye-catching colors, and they know how to make the room pop. There are hundreds of options to choose from! Whether you decide tropical, floral, or even rustic, it’s a perfect way to bid summer farewell.

MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY; DRINKS: JULINA MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

    Shades of Purple

It’s always been said that purple is the color of royalty. In fact, Queen Elizabeth I forbade anyone except the royal family to wear it. That’s because the purple fabric was so expensive back in the day, that only royals could afford to buy it.

But now, you don’t have to be royal but you sure as hell should feel like one on this special day. Think shades of cranberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, plums, and even eggplants. Go all out with purple drinks, purple desserts; the choices are endless!

    PHOTOGRAPHY: ELISA BRICKER

The three shades of purple are red-purple, purple, and blue purple and are complemented well with splashes of navy here and there.

Peach and Charcoal (cr: Martha Stewart Weddings)

When I first saw this color combo, I was definitely hesitant, but it only took me a minute to fall in love with the concept. It’s classy, dark and moody, and the peach stands out and somehow brightens the whole room while adding a humble feel to the atmosphere.

At least, that’s what I got out of it, but then again, I’m not Martha Stewart.

    VICTORIA OF WILD HEARTS COLLECTIVE

Just look how beautiful that is? It’s begging for some props and group photos!

    Muted Rainbow (cr: Wedding Wire)

One of my absolute favorites! I was skeptical when I first read the word ‘rainbow’ because it would seem like no one wants all those colors all over the room, especially at a wedding. But by changing these bright colors into darker versions, you get a beautiful array of colorful options for you and your bridesmaids.

    Pacific Brides

It’s the ultimate color scheme for a fall wedding, it’s hip, it’s cheerful, and there are no limits to what you can do.

  • Nick & Grant Q&A

    Nick & Grant Q&A

    How did you two meet?

We met a little over 5 years ago on Instagram. After 2 weeks of talking, I asked Grant to fly out to Santa Barbara, where I was going to school at the time. We ended up splitting a plane ticket and he flew out the very next week. From the moment we first met at the airport, we knew we had something special. Grant was relieved that I was as tall as I said I was and I thought Grant was even more handsome than his photos could have ever shown.

What’s the most memorable date you’ve ever had?  Why was it so special?

Our most memorable date was our first. We went to a sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara, and unknown to me at the time, this was Grant’s first time eating sushi even though he said he did. He ended up taking the large chunk of wasabi sitting on his plate and said, “I love avocado”! I, of course, thought he was kidding, but he ate the entire thing and tried not to let me notice how uncomfortable he actually was. We still laugh about that moment today. After dinner, we enjoyed an early evening walk down State Street and ended our night with cake at a little Danish bakery, which was important to me because I am Danish. This date was perfect and our most memorable.

When did you know that you wanted to get married?

We knew we were getting married probably about six months into our relationship. Grant started hinting at getting married about a year and then I finally popped the question after about 2 years.

Tell us more about your proposal!

I ended up proposing to Grant in Central Park in New York. The night before, we ended up staying at the Ritz Carlton in Central Park. Grant was blown away and he thought it was my Christmas gift to him. The very next morning, his family flew into New York and it was perfect time to propose. We were checking out of the hotel and he did not suspect a thing. We walked into Central Park to get some photos with his family, and while he was turned around, I got on one knee, in front of the bridge in the Home Alone 2 scene, and asked him to marry me.

    Where was your wedding?

We ended up getting married at the Four Seasons in Orlando Florida. This was the perfect place for our family in Florida and also for our guests out of town to come visit for the wedding, but also make a vacation out of their trip.

What was the most fun part of planning your wedding?

The most fun part about planning our wedding was picking the venue. We ended up getting married at the Four Seasons Orlando. The entire process from picking the space to trying out the food was definitely our favorite part of planning.

What is your favorite wedding memory?

Our favorite wedding memory was a moment shared at the reception. All of the music seemed to go away completely and we looked over at everyone eating their dinner and began to realize how perfect the night was. This moment was very special to the both of us because it was a way to recognize all of the hard work we put into the wedding but also a time to realize how much we loved each other and that this was the beginning to the rest of our lives together.

What does your current name mean to you? Or what did your birth name (name at birth) mean to you?

Our birth names mean a lot to us, however, they do not define who we are individually or as a couple. We are still able to carry on traditions from both families while we begin to create our own.

Are you both changing your name? If not, how did you decide who would change their name?

Only one of us is changing their name. The way this came about was actually very simple and funny at the same time. A week into dating, I told Grant he had to switch his name if you ever plan on getting married to me and he said yes. Some people say that is unfair or demanding, but it was very important to me and Grant knew that.

What does changing your name mean to you?

Changing our names means the world to both of us. We plan on having kids someday and want to share the same name with our entire family. This way, we can grow as a family by having the same last names as our kids, and their kids in the future.

When Is the Best Time to Take Your Honeymoon

(Plus the Details on Having a Mini-Moon!)

For those of you wondering, the answer is no, a honeymoon and a mini-moon are not the same things. Both are great and have their pros and cons but share a slight difference. By definition, a honeymoon is a long break taken in a faraway place which is most likely on the list of dream destinations. A mini-moon is made closer to home, consists of less vacation time, and probably won’t cost you half the price of your traditional honeymoon.

More people are opting for mini-moons for various reasons, and I can’t blame them! After spending thousands of dollars on a wedding, the last thing I need is to spend more money on places like Aruba or the Caribbeans. Would it be ideal? Of course, but I prefer to save my money for more reasonable things…like a two million dollar beach house.

Kidding. But seriously, the amazing thing about mini-moons is that you still have the chance to decompress after the wedding. Being closer to home just means you’re familiar with the terrain, it’s inexpensive, and you can bring your dog along! Plus, if you’re a workaholic like me, you’re closer to work in case something urgent pops up (don’t judge me).

This little mini-vacation doesn’t have to be boring! You can still visit somewhere exciting, depending on where you live. For example, someone who lives in a small town in California can head to San Francisco or book a hotel at Disneyland! Every state has it’s “Eiffel Tower,” somewhere everybody wants to visit.

Granted, this isn’t the vacation you’ve been dreaming of since you were twelve, but it will give you a chance to save up and plan for the future.

With that being said, let’s talk about the best time for you and your partner to take that honeymoon you’ve been anticipating.

By now, you probably already know that when it comes to planning a honeymoon, three things need to be on your side: timing, weather, and a budget. You also probably already know it’s going to be tough to have all three. So listen closely…

    Budget

You’ve just spent thousands of dollars on a wedding that took months (maybe even years) to plan and now, it’s over. A honeymoon requires its very own budget for plane tickets, hotels, fare, food, souvenirs, and $25 for a spiked coconut drink that I am still very outraged about till this day.

Don’t worry; there are ways to save. Scott’s Cheap Flights allows you to receive notifications anytime tickets become more affordable, and can help you save “up to 90% on international flights”. That’s a lavish deal and a ton of savings!

When it comes to booking a hotel, keep in mind shoulder season. According to Insider, “Both flights and hotels are often discounted during the fall because fewer people are traveling during that time…so in addition to saving money, you’re also likely going to avoid crowds and long lines in typically tourist-filled cities if you travel in the fall.”

    Weather

Do not rely on the internet for accurate weather forecasts. I will repeat it because I have been a victim of the buffoonery.

Do not rely on the internet for accurate weather forecasts.

You are better off calling the location of which you are planning to visit and get an answer from them. Whether it’s Aruba or the African Savanna, weather plays a huge role and maybe the difference between an exceptional or regretful honeymoon.

    Timing

Visionary and author Stefan Emunds once said: “Time is an illusion; timing is an art.”

Timing is everything. Nobody wants to schedule a honeymoon on the busiest months of the year. You get to the airport, its flooded with people and delayed flights and crying kids and cranky people and the worst part of all…the TSA. You finally get to your destination, wherever it is, and it is overly crowded, and you don’t get the chance to enjoy your stay the way you envisioned.

All I’m saying is be cautious of your planning because this is your honeymoon. It’s meant to be a memorable stay, so set aside some time to figure out what works best for you and your partner!

    Best of luck!

  • Wedding Vendors That Are Worth Going the Extra Mile for

Wedding Vendors That Are Worth Going the Extra Mile for

Your wedding day is the most exclusive, most anticipated day of your life. Or at least, I hope it is. Other people may not, but you will always remember this day to the last detail. That is if the circumstances are worth remembering, of course.

While your typical American wedding consists of the usual vendors, revenues, and traditions, why not make it a day to cherish for all your wonderful guests as well? Nothing too outrageous, I promise, but a little something that has people wondering, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Here a few ideas worth having on your special day to win your audience over and leave a lasting impression.

    Ice Cream TRUCK

Of course, something edible is going to make the top of this list, because people are always hungry. If they say they aren’t, they are lying. What says thank you for coming more than ice cream? No, no scratch that, what says I love every one of you individually more than ice cream? You’d think it’s not that serious, but when was the last time you went to a wedding, and they had an ice cream stall or truck?

    Answer: never.

This is an excellent idea to implement if you’re hosting a summer wedding and if children are going to be in attendance. Contraband Events works internationally and offers two designs for hire: A 1930s Art Deco or 1960s Yellow Psychedelic. Their award-winning flavors are the missing piece to your guest’s fantastic stay.

    Sparklers

While I did believe fireworks should make #2, it suddenly dawned on me, “what’s something sensational that can involve my guest without any of the hard work?”

Sparklers are a pleasant way to make your guests feel like they’re a part of something bigger. You can set a box of sparklers on each table with a note asking the guests to participate in due time. It could be when you’re walking the aisle, or your first dance as a married person, or any moment you feel like sparks should fly!

You can purchase customized wedding sparklers on amazon without hurting your budget. Please use caution if children are present!

    Photo Booth

Do you have a theme for your wedding? Or is your plan to be as traditional as possible?

Either way, a photo booth is a must. It could be set when guests first walk in, or after dinner. I believe there are more pros than cons regarding a photo booth. Your friends and family will have the chance to surprise you with photos, especially if props are available. Because we all know how busy the bride and groom are, and as much as you want to see all your loved ones, time will simply not allow it.

It’s important to consider that a photo booth might take up too much attention from the reception, so have a schedule set with the vendor, so people don’t get distracted. If you’re looking to hire an affordable photo booth, click here

    Jazz Band

Ok, but why Jazz? Because of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, The Duke, and Ella Fitzgerald. I could go on and on…and on. The legends that have made this sweet, sweet music that you can’t help but move and swing your body to all night. Even if you’re not a fan of Jazz, you have to admit; it’s musical powers grips onto you tighter than spandex.

No, you do not have to go with jazz; everything, in the end, is a preference. I’m merely showing you one path that will lead to exhausted and ecstatic dancers. It’s tough to find a great jazz band, but not impossible.

Jazz Bands for Hire is a great place to start looking.

    Comedian

Whatever type of entertainment you had in mind, abandon it. Ok, not entirely, but if you’re not thinking of hiring a comedian to make you laugh your ass off, then what are you doing? Weddings are tear-jerker events, damn it, and people want to laugh.

    via GIPHY

You could set 30 minutes for a comedian to come in after you’ve made your marriage official,  your father-daughter dance, before dinner, or any time you have to spare.

Comedians can drastically change the wedding atmosphere into fun, casual, and friendly. Just make sure to review the comedian’s skit if you’re looking to hire. It’s improbable that a comedian won’t have some crude humor, so make sure everyone is old enough to be there! The last thing you want on your wedding day are the judgemental eyes of several parents who brought their kids along.

    Trust me; I’ve been there.

  • Procedures of Real ID

    Procedures of Real ID

If you have not yet heard from your local news channel or read about it somewhere on social media, you now officially have one year to obtain a Real ID from your home state. If this is your first time hearing of Real ID and you have no idea what we’re talking about, don’t panic.

To put it as plainly as possible,  a Real ID is your driver’s license or identification card with one little tweak: a star in the top right. It’s the federal government’s way of verifying that you are you

Before we dive into what Real ID is and how it works, let’s brush up on our history, shall we?

The Real ID act dates back to 2005 and was implemented by President George Bush following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The idea was to alleviate fraud, protect people’s real identity, and increase national security. By February 2017, 25 states and D.C. adhered to the Real ID procedure, and the government granted the extensions of the remaining states to change their I.D. practices.

     Alaska DMV

By October 2020, all states must be Real ID compliant. When applying; you must provide your full legal name, SSN, birth certificate, and documents proving your residency ( bills, bank statements, etc.). So yes, it will be a little more complicated than just renewing your driver’s license. For this particular method, more documents are needed to verify your identity.

The Real ID allows you to board commercial flights and enter federal buildings. According to the Department of Homeland Security website, if an air traveler does not possess a Real ID by October 2020, they will need another form of identification, like a passport.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Is it mandatory? Personally, if I’m going to waste hours of my day on something, it sure as heck won’t be the DMV. To answer your question, no, it is not mandatory. The picture below will give you a better idea on whether you should apply for a Real ID or not.

Of course, any ID you have on hand will do, but if you’re a constant traveler, then Real ID is recommended. According to the DMV, if you choose to stick with your current identification, the phrase “Federal Limits Apply” will be written on your card. That way, if you are traveling within the U.S., that card will hold no use and cannot be considered a legitimate I.D. by the federal government. In other words, the TSA will be trained to not accept any other form of ID, and complications will arise, which will lead to delayed flights and holding.

    California DMV

If you’re wondering what the difference is between your current I.D. and Real ID, it’s the little star that will be printed out on your card. According to Real ID expert Alexis Campbell, all the star does is “verify that this person is who they say there are.” Keep in mind that your state government is responsible for your old forms of I.D. Think of the star as a federally approved stamp.

What else makes this procedure different? Public informant Charlie Moore states that “the real I.D. compliant credentials don’t ever require fingerprinting,” while other I.D.s do. When the Real ID Act goes into effect in October 2020, the need for fingerprints will be gone completely.

If you have any questions that have not been answered in this article, please visit your local DMV website to find out what your state requires for this procedure.
