Movies to Keep an Eye Out for in 2020

Good God, it seemed like 2020 was NEVER coming, and if you’ve heard of all the movies that are releasing this year, then you know we’ve waited far too long! People, you know how long I’ve been waiting for Disney to make a Mulan live-action film? I’ve survived this long solely for that reason. Other than Mulan, Marvel’s Phase Four will kick off, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back with Bad Boys, Matthew McConaughey in The Gentleman, and Sophia Lillis in Gretel & Hansel. I’m a sucker for fairytale turned horror films. It’s a much anticipated year for the entertainment industry and cinema lovers everywhere, and I’ve gathered the perfect list of movies, so you don’t miss out on anything.

Get ready to mark your calendars, folks; these movies are a must-see.

    Mulan

Yes, I would put a Disney first. My generation was raised on Disney, and to see an Asian female character take the spotlight was all it took to convince me of the strength all women withhold but forced to keep down because…well, society. Yes, I interpreted that from a child’s movie. Directed by Niki Caro, this fantasy-war film stars Liu Yifei and is set to release March 27, 2020. If you’re not familiar with the epic tale, Mulan is the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, and when the Huns invade China, she takes his place in battle disguised as a man. Her determination and quick wit are what keep her going on this journey to embrace her true potential and make a nation proud.

    No Time To Die

The 25th installment of the James Bond franchise is titled No Time To Die and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective). Daniel Craig is back for the role and informed Entertainment Weekly it would be his last time playing the iconic character. Alongside him for the first time ever is a female 007 agent, played by Lashana Lynch and a new villain played by Academy Award winner Rami Malek. After leaving active service for some time, Bond gets approached by Felix Leiter, a friend, and CIA officer. He enlists him to search for a missing scientist. When it becomes apparent that the scientist was abducted, Bond sets a plan to find him regardless of the dangers the mission holds.

    Jungle Cruise

Get ready to see Dwayne Johnson everywhere this year, because his name pops up in several movies releasing soon. Along with some impressive actors and actresses, the film is based on the Disneyland theme park ride. If you’ve never been on the ride, it’s a small riverboat that steers through a jungle filled with wild animals and reptiles. The movie is similar, but obviously with a plot and supernatural element. The captain of the riverboat, Frank (Johnson), accompanies a scientist (Emily Blunt) and her brother (Jack Whitehall) on a mission to find the Tree of Life, which is believed to possess healing powers. All while competing against a German expedition and surviving the jungle’s wilderness.

    The Gentleman

Alright, alright, alright! You’re either a huge fan of Guy Ritchie’s work or…you can’t stand it. Matthew McConaughey stars as Mickey Pearson, who runs a successful marijuana empire in London. When he decides to cash out his business, people’s true intentions come to light as they scheme and use blackmail to undermine him. It’s Ritchie, so expect car chases, gunfights, gangs, and a thirst for blood. Expect to see some legendary actors, including Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant.

    Promising Young Women

It’s rare to receive a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, but this provocative thriller did just that. Write-director Emerald Fennell has presented women everywhere with the story of Cassie Thomas (Carey Mulligan), a med school dropout. Her dreams of becoming a doctor were derailed when a tragic event derailed her future. An event that somehow shaped the rest of her life. She lives with her parents and works at a coffee shop, which seems like the typical aftermath of any dropout, but Cassie has a secret, a double life she leads at night.

Film critics are going crazy for the cruel over the top truth. Teen Vogue states, “A stellar performance from Mulligan paired with an ambitious vision from Fennell comes together to create a story that’s a bold takedown of rape culture and those that defend it.” Believe me, when I say, you don’t want to miss out on this one.

    Bad Boys For Life

Instagram was taken by storm when Will Smith announced he’d be playing Genie in Aladdin, but when we found out we’d be getting another Bad Boys? People lost their minds. While Micheal Bay did not direct the third film, it’s still packed with action, adventure, and of course, comedy. I mean, it’s Smith and Lawrence. In the sequel, the wife and son of a Mexican drug lord are set out to kill anyone involved in his downfall. One of those people is Miami Detective Mike Lowrey (Smith). He teams up with partner Burnett (Lawrence) to bring the culprits to justice. Will everything go as planned, or will the two end up screwing up with their new tactical squad?

    Gretel and Hansel

Trails of bread crumbs, candy houses, wicked witches, and a dark forest. This is not the first Gretel and Hansel, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Sophia Lillis is a fantastic actress who made her breakthrough in the horror film It and It 2. She has starred in a few other movies afterward, including this one. After their mother slowly loses her sanity, Gretel and Hansel pave their way into the dark forest, hoping to fend for themselves.

Practically starving, they come across a table of stranded food outside what looks like an abandoned home. After the owner invites them in, they soon start to suspect that her hospitality is bound to come with a cost.

  • Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts/Ideas

    Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts/Ideas

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you might start feeling the pressure of finding the perfect gift for that ideal person-be it your partner, friend, child, or even pet. From my experience, it always felt like last-minute ideas carried more thought than overthinking your gift-giving and hoping for the best. While the traditional flowers and chocolate are the go-to for this particular day, there are so many options and get this; not everything has to be red and pink, as tempting as that is.

So without further ado, here are a few affordable, hearty, last-minute ideas and gifts to surprise that special someone.

    Name Engraved Necklace

You can find engraved necklaces at any jewel retailer in your area. Or you can find it online by just doing a quick google search. While the target audience is mostly women, I genuinely believe engraved necklaces are for everyone. The options are endless, and you can buy a set for you and your partner. ONecklace has some of the lowest prices and several options to choose from, so get a pair while they’re still on sale!

Idea: The heart and key necklaces are always a grand idea. You give one to your special someone, and one for you, so that way, you’ll have something to remind you of them.

    Bath Bomb Gift Set

The best thing about Valentine’s Day is it’s not just the chocolates that are on sale. Bath and body care products are fantastic gift ideas! Would I choose them over flowers and chocolate? Uhm, definitely. The sets are arranged beautifully, and everything is scented like a Midnight Summer’s Dream. Bath and Body Works ends to have incredible deals year-round, but it’s always extra special on Valentine’s Day. Lush also has some beautiful sets, as well.

Idea: Draw a bath for your partner, grab a bottle of wine, throw in a unicorn bath bomb, and enjoy a bath together… with John Legend playing in the background, of course.

    Limited Edition/Exclusive Wine

If you’re not aware of how romantic limited edition wine can be, well…you know now. Wine is an event planner on its own; it shifts all events into place. Of course, there’s always the option of buying from your local supermarket. Just because it’s a special day does not mean you need to empty your wallet on a particular item. For some great options, click here.

Idea: Set up a room in the house to surprise your partner. Spread rose petals, set up candles, and prepare two wine glasses just for the two of you. The wine will take care of the rest.

    Fill-In-The-Blank Journal

The What I Love About Us journal is one of those presents that make you feel like a kid again. It’s one of those things that you’d love to fill out with your partner first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed. It’s something so simple but requires you to think intently about what it is you love about your relationship.

Idea: Every other day, one of you pick a phrase to fill out, then discuss it with your significant other.

    Book Set

What’s a gift that you can open over and over again? You guessed it, folks, book! Books are practical, useful gifts. They increase in value as years go by, and it doesn’t require much thought, assemble, or batteries for that matter! If you’re loved one is a literary fanatic, then the first edition of their favorite book is a thoughtful present.

Idea: Commit one night a week to read a few chapters of your favorite book together! The goal is to read a book every two weeks.

    Sport Attire

Give the gift of fitness. I mean, what’s more attractive than getting fit together? The fitness industry is forever growing, so apparel is just one of many choices. You can also choose a fitness watch, new sneakers, or new gym equipment. Several sports retailers hold limited sales on holidays like this, so be quick to catch some deals before everything’s gone!

Idea: Buy matching sportswear and dedicate three days to the gym together. Couples who workout together, stay together!

    Lingerie

After all, it is still Valentine’s Day. Lingerie has a rep for being expensive, but thanks to the internet and thousands of lingerie brands, that’s not the case anymore. Rihanna’s recent launch of her lingerie line is epic. It’s insanely affordable, high quality, and offers sizes up to 3X! That’s a huge deal for some people who have a difficult time find the perfect fit. For an unforgettable night, look into laces and strings. And diamond rings. But that’s a topic for another day.

Idea: Do I really have to tell you?

    Polaroid Camera

Memories can last a lifetime. What happened to good old Kodak cameras and polaroid shots? With smartphones able to provide us with everything with just the touch of our finger, old fashioned has become…old. Most Polaroid cameras nowadays come with bundles, stickers, and accessories. It truly is a perfect gift for both children and adults and is sure to capture every special moment!

Idea: Take photos of your adventures together, and create a scrapbook of all your cherished memories.

  • Fun Valentines Day Activities for Kids

Fun Valentines Day Activities for Kids

Valentine’s Day has to be one of the most satisfying days of the year to get crazy creative. As adults, we don’t usually have the time to sit at a table and create anything by hand, unfortunately. But with children, well…they have all the time in the world. When I volunteered part-time at a daycare center for children in high school, Valentine’s Day was the hype. Children would arrive wearing red or pink, holding little bags of heart candies for their friends, and so excited to get started with the crafts we had planned for them.

If you’re planning activities for your class or your kids at home, I have one piece of advice for you: don’t hesitate to buy ALL the glitter. If you choose to, please do your part by purchasing only biodegradable glitter. Children tend to use it in surplus when it comes to this particular day. Without any further ado, here are our favorite activities for children on this artful and candy-filled holiday.

    Sponge Heart Painting

Sensory activities are great for children of all ages. They keep them occupied and bring out their imaginative side. All you need for this activity is a sponge cut into a heart (or any shape you want), white construction paper, and red/pink paint. Glitter is optional, of course, but highly recommended because come on, it’s Valentine’s Day. You dip the sponge into the paint and stamp it on white construction paper. By including different size hearts (sponges), your child will have more options to play with and get creative. The result is a beautiful masterpiece by none other than…well, your masterpiece. When it dries, have them write out to whom they’d like to give their painting!

    Handprint Heart Tree Craft

The reason I love this 3D craft is that it can be used for any special day. It’s uncomplicated, requires supplies you probably have at home, and counts as quality time for you and your child. You start by cutting strips from pink construction paper (6x.5) and hold the ends together with a staple, like a heart. You will need to make 15-50 heart “leaves” for your tree. On a brown sheet of cardstock paper, trace your kid’s hand, cut it out, and glue it on a piece of blue cardstock paper. This will be your tree.  Place a generous amount of white glue on a paper plate, but before gluing your hearts on the tree, arrange them to get an idea of where they will go. Dip the bottom of each heart in glue and stick them on your tree! Frame it or present it to a friend.

    Valentine’s Sensory Painting

If you think your children will be the only ones to enjoy this activity, you are mistaken. It combines sensory play, process art, and is very therapeutic. This activity uses shaving cream and paints BUT if your child tends to put everything in their mouth, consider whipped cream and food coloring instead. It’s edible, and you won’t have to worry about them becoming curious and eating it. Fill any baking tray you have with whatever cream you’re using and squirt paint or several drops of red/pink food coloring over the cream. Edible glitter is also an option here. Lastly, with a pointer or stick, have your child swirl through the cream and watch the colors mix differently!

    Exchange Coloring Pages

Tell me these coloring pages are not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen. The characters are so lovable! If you want something super simplistic, yet will keep your kid’s head down and intrigued, then coloring pages are the best option. All you’ll need are coloring pages and coloring pencils. Boom, that’s it. The best part is you can print as many copies as you want, whether it’s in a classroom or the home. With so many different preferences, it’s a great calming activity for both young and older kids. When they complete a page, have them write a love note on the back, place it in an envelope, and exchange it with someone else!

    Valentine’s Marshmallow Pop

Finally, something to eat, right? All that crafting gets exhausting eventually. Don’t worry; this is possibly the easiest dessert you can ever make with a child. All you’ll need is jumbo marshmallows, white chocolate, red/pink confetti sprinkles, and wood pop sticks. It’s pretty straightforward from there. You melt the chocolate according to instructions and assist your child in sticking the marshmallows onto the pop sticks. Dip half the marshmallow into the chocolate and let it move down the sides a bit, so it doesn’t melt downwards. Cover with sprinkles and place the sticks upright into a glass until the chocolate sets. Eat right away or refrigerate for later!

    Valentine’s Day Heart Toss

Time to bring out your competitive side, kid! Well, not too competitive-crying isn’t what the result should be. This game can be played with two or more players, and its simplicity makes it a recurring activity in my home. You’ll need one 12×12 scrapbook paper, scissors, yarn, hole punch, tape, and three pieces of “junk” construction paper. You fold the scrap paper in half and cut out one heart shape and 1.5 inside that heart, cut out another heart. Punch two holes through the top of the heart on both sides and tie two long pieces of yarn through the holes. Tape the end of the thread above a doorway at a height where your children will be able to toss comfortably. Cut three pink construction papers into four pieces and have the kids scrunch them up. Hand them the scrunched “balls” and have them throw it into the heart! It’s an enjoyable activity to add to a delightful day!

  • How You Can Stay Healthy This Winter Season

How You Can Stay Healthy This Winter Season

Winter Blues are real! And they’re preventing me from ever losing those 2 (ok, 7) pounds I’ve gained during the holiday festivities. There was so much planning, food, and fun that it’s genuinely no wonder we fall so behind regarding our health and fitness status. It’s common considering the many speculations we have encompassing our minds.

Once the holidays are over, we tend to fall in a state of…well, anxiety. I don’t blame you considering all the mania that flows over you suddenly. Staying indoors cuddled up next to a fireplace sounds a lot more comforting than hitting the gym or going for a jog. As that demotivation slowly consumes us, our immunity weakens, leading to illness, laziness, and even depression. This is why we tend to eat high carb foods in winter. The sugar raises serotonin levels in the brain, making us feel happier, therefore causing us to eat more throughout the day.

    via GIPHY

But I know how tough it is to get out of that funk. The path back to health-or staying healthy- is a bumpy, dark road. But simple steps can be taken to prevent you from falling behind and catching up on your health.

Freeze! Slowly back away from the cake!

Let’s start with that carb craving that seems to have no end. There’s no harm in indulging during the winter season, but distinguishing what your diet should consist of to boost your immune system is an excellent place to start. While food is a crucial part, nutritionist Sally Wisbey says that “staying positive, exercising and getting a good night’s sleep are also important.” Incorporating a fulfilling breakfast such as porridge or oats topped with winter fruits is a great way to stay energized and satiated throughout the day. Sources of Vitamin C, Zinc, and Omega 3 contribute to helping prevent bugs that cause viruses and assist in strengthening immunity.

It’s not easy avoiding sugary snacks, but finding healthier alternatives is a great way to stay healthy and not affect your weight.

I (don’t) like to move it, move it…

Now, finding the motivation to exercise is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. It’s almost impossible to get a workout in during the cold, but nonetheless, essential for a fit figure. No matter the weather, getting outside for a quick workout allows you to reconnect with nature and does wonders for your mood.

    via GIPHY

    Let’s get Fit(ted)!

Once you acquire the right information, it gets easier to get out there and consolidate a workout. When you know which workout clothes to invest in to keep you warm and your skin protected, you’re halfway there. If you live in a snowy area, then you need to keep traction in mind. Personal trainer Eric Ridings says staying “on plowed or salted surfaces” to lessen the risk of injuries. There’s also the option of heading to an indoor gym. Everyday Health has twelve incredibly helpful tips to help you get warmed up!

    Time to get LIIT…at home!

If working outdoors isn’t your jam, then contemplate working out indoors. Clear out some space and head to YouTube, because your options are endless

    via GIPHY

No, really, it’s incredible just how many channels are targeted for home workouts. Some of my favorites are FitnessBlender and The Body Project. You can take your pick, so whether you want something uncomplicated and light or a little more brutal and out of breath, it’s your pick! Some wonders come when working out in the comfort of your own home, so if this is what works better, then go for it!

Finally, if you feel like no matter what you do, there’s no hope, then partner up with a friend. When there’s two of you pushing each other to get sh*t done, then everything becomes more fun and a lot more challenging. You can set up a workout schedule, leave yourself motivating notes everywhere, write down tips that would make the process more comfortable, and of course, keep reminding yourself not to give up

    via GIPHY

It sounds like a ton of work. That’s because it truly is. Staying healthy during the winter takes a ton of willpower and loads of patience, but with the proper knowledge, it’ll become more straightforward, and it won’t seem like such a chore.

  • What You Need to Know Before Taking a Passport Photo

What You Need to Know Before Taking a Passport Photo

+ the How-to on our NewPassportPhoto App

Applying or renewing legal documents is an austere process, especially nowadays. Every application comes with its own set of rules, and if you can’t keep up, you’ll end up getting pulled over for an expired license because a trip to the DMV just seemed like a pain in the behind.

Passport photos are bound to come up every few years, and honestly, you’d think it would be reasonably manageable. Still, the U.S State Department has other plans for you, and taking a passport photo is not exactly the smoothest process.

But worry not, if you follow these rules, then it won’t seem like such a headache.

    via GIPHY

Firstly, to answer everyone’s number one burning question regarding this method… yes, you can take the photos on your own, but read carefully and follow all the guidelines, so you get it right the first time around.

Some of the following information has been cited from the U.S. Department of State website.

No matter what country you hail from, all passport backgrounds will be a solid color. In the U.S, it’s white, but few countries offer other light colors. Sites such as MyPassportPhotos provide you with the rules based on your home country.

If you are planning to get your photo taken, large retailers such as CVS, Walgreens, and Costco offer low prices that go as little as $6. All passport photos must be 2X2 inches, and “head must be between 1 -1 3/8 inches (25 – 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head”.

    PhotoElf

When it comes to resolution and quality, it goes without saying that your photo cannot be blurry or grainy. We’re talking 4K resolution pictures, and there are no excuses, considering everyone offers that option, and an iPhone camera is basically a Canon. If you are planning on using an app and printing your photos, then you need to invest in the glossy print paper such as these. You cannot alter your photo (body features) in any way through programs such as Photoshop or PicMonkey.

When it comes to poses and expressions, it’s better to show you than tell you. Here’s an example of right and wrong.

    NZ Passports

That is the definition of neutral. Are you happy? Sad? We’ll never know because this is the required expression. Your face should be facing the camera, not sideways, upwards, or any way your face is not in full view.

Attire is not too difficult to adhere to, I promise. This is not America’s Next Top Model, so please leave your fashion statements at home. There is no need to overthink what to wear, so stay casual as usual. Dress like you’re running your everyday errands.

In 2016, the State Department passed a no glasses rule in passport photos. Unless you have a severe medical reason and a letter from your doctor, then glasses are a no-no. If you wear a head covering for religious reasons, then you need a “signed statement that verifies that the hat or head covering in your photo is part of traditional religious attire worn continuously in public.”

    Elon Uni

Even if your head cover is acceptable, it cannot be covering your face or “cast shadows on your face”. Same goes with facial piercings; as long as they’re not hiding your face, they can stay on.

We created NewPassportPhoto for one reason only, and that’s because we don’t want you to go through the hassle that is getting your photo taken. Doing it from the comfort of your own home is what we’re about, as simplicity is our aim.

You download the app, snap a photo, and that’s it, you’ve got the perfect picture. Plus, if you order one of our premium packages, we will gladly enhance, print, and ship your photos to you: no more hassle, no more wasting time, and no more mugshots.

Let us help you get one step closer to your ideal photo.

  • Affordable Winter Getaways for the Newlyweds

Affordable Winter Getaways for the Newlyweds

Friends, can you believe we’re already two weeks into the new year? How? The last couple of weeks feel like they never even existed. Half the time, I was in a food coma…or passed out drunk.

You probably were, too, so let’s not judge. While that was fun, it’s now time to snap back to reality and resume our rightful duties.

Over the break, one of my dearest friends got engaged, yay! If I’m honest, the night is kind of blurry, but I do remember drunkenly opening a very expensive bottle of champagne to celebrate.

My partner was not happy. What’s done is done, and now it’s time to (help) plan a wedding! Granted, I do have until the end of the year considering their wedding in November, but that’s what makes this so exciting. Everything is more enjoyable in winter! And a hell of a lot cheaper!

Related Article: Planning a Winter Wedding?

But recently, I’ve discovered The Secret. It’s not really about the wedding. It’s about what happens after. It’s about the honeymoon, the getaway, exotic cities, and the newlywed suite with little bottles of alcohol for $9…so I want to help you find the most affordable places to get that. Here are some insanely affordable winter getaways that won’t break the bank.

    Vienna, Austria

I’ve written so much about Vienna in winter because it is an absolute Christman wonderland. That’s why around December, they have a high tourism season, so waiting till after New Year’s may be the more suitable option. Known for its Christmas market, love of music, exceptional coffee cafes, palaces, and giant Ferris wheel, Vienna was voted number one city for its quality of life (Independent).

    Hotels.com

It’s no wonder millions of tourists flock there around the holiday season. If you choose to get away to Vienna post-holidays, you’ll find incredible sales, better accommodations, lower rates for air travel, and the festive atmosphere still in motion. But make sure to pack extra sweaters, it’s freezing over here!

    Costa Rica

Rainforests, tropical beaches, dreamy sunsets, and majestic scenery. The dry season (mid-December to April) is commonly known as the best time to visit this tropical paradise. While temperatures range from region to region, this location is an affordable getaway no matter what time of year.

    Lonely Planet Images

According to Kayak, the cheapest ticket found from the U.S to Costa Rica can be as low as $200. It’s always recommended to book in advance, no matter the destination, but if you’re looking for an adventurous and incredibly affordable honeymoon, then Costa Rica maybe your dream escape. Make sure to bring along small bills because you do not want to leave without souvenirs for family and friends!

    Tampa, Florida

If you’re looking for a warm, modest, reasonable, and amiable location, then look no further than Tampa. Florida gets a bad rep as a vacation choice, but if you dig deeper, you’ll find it’s a relaxing getaway nonetheless. If you’re in the U.S, then driving to Florida is an option, but even if you choose flying, prices can go as low as $200 (Kayak).

    Dennis Macdonald

Here is a list of budget-friendly hotels that go as low as $200 and are near some of Tampa’s best tourist attractions.

    Banff, Canada

According to U.S News Travel, Banff was voted #2 in the best places to visit in Canada. And for all the right reasons, of course. If you’re looking for a romantic, icy getaway, but can’t afford to fly to the wintery slopes of Switzerland, then Banff is an ideal alternative.

    Banff Jasper Collection

Filled with wildlife, fairytale landscape, hikes, tours, and gondola rides, Banff is an experience you will never forget. The best time to visit this secluded gem in the Canadian Rockies is December to March when the weather is slightly warmer, and hotel rates are at a more reasonable cost.

    New Orleans, Louisiana

Ok, why New Orleans? If you’re a foodie like me, you know. But if you’re a foodie and a blues & jazz lover, then you know. I’m talking Cafe Beignet, Mr. B’s Bistro, GW Fins, BB King’s Blue Clubs, and so much more! The bucket list for foods to devour is endless

    TravelZoo

But enough about the food (as if anything else matters), let’s get into why Crescent City was ranked number one place to visit in February (U.S News Travel). You always want to make weather one of your priorities when traveling, and New Orleans in the winter is the best time. You can explore nearly everything on foot here, and as long as you’re not planning on staying in the French Quarters, the accommodations rate is reasonably priced. Tickets go as low as $60 (CheapOair)! That leaves your pocket full for all that excellent Creole cuisine you’re going to eat!

Bring your partying pants with you, because New Orleans is truly the city that never sleeps.

  • New Year, New You! What to Consider When Changing Your Name

New Year, New You! What to Consider When Changing Your Name

Of all the things to think about when planning a wedding, a name change might be at the top of your list. In today’s modern world, it is more socially acceptable to change your name to whatever you want. When it comes to the final decision regarding changing your name, here are a few options to consider.

Stick With The Name Your Mama Gave Ya

You decide to stick with the name given to you at birth because of obvious reasons. Every person has an idea as to why they keep their name as is and there’s nothing wrong with that. By keeping your maiden name, you’ll save yourself the trouble of filling out countless applications and visits to the happiest place on earth: the DMV. It’s widely known that in many parts of the world, a woman taking her husband’s last name is not only mandatory but what makes a marriage last. With the numbers of women seeking a part in the work field quickly on the rise, the percentage of women keeping their maiden name for professional reasons is a prominent one.

Pragya Agarwal, a researcher the University of Liverpool and business owner of Hedge and Hog Prints states that her name is a “huge part” of her identity and being responsible for several academic publications, “it did not make sense to change it.” It also makes that women will keep their maiden name to be credited for the professional work they present in their field.

    Take Your Spouse’s Name

The most common-traditional route. Several women in today’s world choose to take their spouse’s last name after marriage. The procedure is a long one but can be fairly explained here

First, the couple needs to obtain an official copy of their marriage certificate. Depending on which state you reside in, you’ll end up paying a different fee for a copy (you will probably need more than one). You will then need to apply for a new SSN (completely free) along with your ID and marriage certificate. You can either choose to mail in your form or head over to the nearest Social Security office.

Next up is your driver license and passport. Again, depending on where you live, fees will vary. Be sure to fill out the appropriate forms for a new passport after the name change. If you are a frequent traveler, you don’t want your ID stating a different name than your passport. That won’t look too good when you’re trying to board that plane to Bora Bora for your honeymoon.

    Hyphenate Your Names

If you want to hyphenate your name-taking both maiden names and combining them to make two family names- you will still have to go through the same name change process and fill out the same applications. Read more about the process here

Some people choose to hyphenate their names as soon as they get married, and some like Nicole Bradley-Bernard decided to change it after six years of marriage. In her article, she states that her long-awaited decision came after the realization of self-importance. She goes on to say how one’s name shouldn’t be tossed out just because of outdated traditions.

    via GIPHY

By choosing to have your husband’s name does not mean you need to give up yours. It’s always been expected of women to give up their identity after marriage, and alas, women are stepping up and holding on to their original status. Hyphenating your last names is a great way to keep your name and take your husband’s name. It’s also a great example of unity within a family once couples decide to bring children in the picture.

Change Name Legally, But Keep It Professional

Hannah Montana said it best: you get the best of both worlds.

This is the route I took because my career depends on my name. I’ll admit, it has not been easy because it causes some confusion among my peers and friends. It’s like having two identities and of course, people constantly asking why I don’t just use my husband’s last name.

    via GIPHY

Imagine working your butt off for the work you do, just to put it under a different name that isn’t even you! I mean, that’s how I saw it, at least. Like I said above, more women are becoming part of the work field, and most nowadays are keeping their maiden name because it is their professional name. If this the route you want to pursue, be sure to consider all the pros and cons of the decision.

    Create A Hybrid Last Name

Yes, this is an actual thing. If all the above options aren’t to your liking, you can make up your last name. I mean, seriously, how fun would that be? If I knew about this option, I would’ve changed my last name to Stark nine years ago. With the eighth season of Game of Thrones coming out, it becomes more tempting as the days go by…

    via GIPHY

Winter is officially here, you guys. If Jon Snow doesn’t end up on the throne, my life will officially have no meaning.

Make sure to let your work of employment, government agencies, your bank, and social media know of your name change after changing it.

  • How to Start the New Year Full of Positivism

How to Start the New Year Full of Positivism

Can you believe that the end of the decade is coming to an end in just a week? It’s surreal how quick this year passed by, and if you’re like me, you’re ecstatic to start a new year, a fresh slate, and new plans to change for the better. Forget resolutions! People create them out of sheer pressure, which results in never sticking to their goal.

    via GIPHY

If the year has been a doozy for you, you’re not alone. Think of the year 2020 as a clean slate for you, another chance to start that business you’ve had in mind, participate in more activities, make a commitment to your health, and mentor yourself mentally to be the bigger and better person.

    Thoughts Have Power

When I decided to change my life for the better, the last thing I considered was the incredible power my thoughts had over my being. When someone tells you that by altering your thoughts, you can change your life, you would think they’re insane

All that talk about frequency and vibrations and water crystals reacting to positive and negative phrases sound like absolute crazy talk. But it works, it’s true, it’s life-changing

    via GIPHY

Several studies have been conducted and have proven that thoughts ultimately make you who you are and are the road you pave to your future. In a YourStory article, journalist Rakhi Chakraborty states how based on new research, “the more self-critical and judgmental you are, the more your subconscious will work to convince you of your worthlessness. But if you make a habit of surrounding yourself with positive reminders and vibes, then the same thoughts will direct your actions towards goal-oriented behavior.”

    Listen to Podcasts

If you have a phone or a radio, then you have access to thousands of podcasts. Thousands. According to the Pew Research Center, “As of 2019, 51% of Americans ages 12 or older have ever listened to a podcast”. Without a doubt, I owe such a significant credit to the podcasts I listen to because they have changed my life.

I have worked harder, studied longer, and changed every aspect of my health just listening to podcasts. That’s how powerful they are. Most of these guys are doctors, psychologists, coaches, mindset mentors, and their words, and advice is holy and valuable.

    via GIPHY

Invest in a journal and take notes on every podcast you listen to. Most range from five to 15 minutes so you can listen to them while doing the dishes, driving to work, warming up at the gym, or taking a bike ride around the block. Here is a list of mindset shifting podcasts, but one that is not on the list (my personal favorite), is right here

    Take Control of Your Health

Do you ever wonder why everybody’s New Year’s goal is to get fit and follow a healthier diet? What goes into your body and how you spend your free time is reflected in the life you live. Does that make sense?

According to Entrepreneur, “Exercise is one thing most successful people do everyday.” The reasons are endless and every person has their answer to why they work out and stay healthy. It doesn’t settle at exercise! Health is primarily mental, but it’s also what goes on your plate, plus the words that come out of your mouth. Accepting yourself is the first and most significant step to taking care of your health.

    Productivity Is Never An Accident

Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” ~ Paul J. Meyer

Paul J. Meyer is my go-to for motivation. No matter how distressed I get, how unmotivated I am, I always come back to this quote. Go ahead, reread it, I’ll wait.

    via GIPHY

When you have an important presentation at work-despite how tired you may be-you force yourself to put in your absolute most hard work in and get it done. The same thing goes for finals and starting your own business. Life-changing events require work, effort, determination, stubbornness, and high productivity

    Write Down Your Goals

A study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews on goal-setting found “that you become 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams, simply by writing them down on a regular basis.” Mary Morrissey explains it more in detail here

By writing down your goals, you are training discipline. You recognize that you have goals- specific goals. It’s vital that you know what your goal is and be very distinct about it. That is what will drive you to achieve those goals.

There is an order to writing down your goals, and Elite Daily does a perfect job explaining how and why it’s so critical. Click here to read more.

  • Last Minute Present Ideas for the Holidays

Last Minute Present Ideas for the Holidays

Ever been scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, and you see a friend’s post with the geotag, “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY.”

Yikes. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a birthday. We get wrapped up in our busy lives, so we tend to forget birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or any other promising event. We’ve all been there. Hell, maybe some of us are there right now. With Christmas right around the corner, it’s challenging to find some time to scour for presents.

    via GIPHY

Worry not, for even last-minute presents can hold sentimental meaning. Here’s a list of gifts that you can always grab last minute that is a surefire way to delight your family and friends.

    Fleece Blankets

Extremely Soft. Cuddly. Fluffy. Plus, it’s the winter season, so why wouldn’t this be the perfect gift? Here’s why this particular gift is number one on the list: it keeps you warm, it feels like an angel is embracing you, you can take it anywhere, people LOVE blankets, and most importantly, it can be found anywhere and won’t break the bank!

     Homemade Cookies

What says, “I’m always thinking of you” more than homemade sweets? Many people might have mixed emotions about someone offering anything handmade, but if someone went out of their way to bake you something, be appreciative. It’s attentive and shows that you’re willing to give something rather than show up empty-handed.

    via GIPHY

This option is also great for people who can’t afford to provide presents this year. Here’s a list of easy homemade cookies that’ll win their hearts.

    Pajama Set

Add this to your fleece blanket, and you’ve got the best gift any human adult could ask for, trust me. Well, and socks. Sad, I know, but if you were ever a broke college student, then you get it.

Pajama sets don’t have to be extravagant. Really, the simpler, the better. But also, silkier, the better. The best thing about pajamas is that it isn’t a one-time thing. It stays with that person for years, and they’ll think of you every time they wear it!

    Candles

Raise your hands if September starts and your candle obsessions awaken along with the crisp, bitter air. Let me tell you the story of my crazy candle craze. Once upon a time, Yankee Candle had a massive sale on their candles. I’m obsessed with their Christmas Cookie scent.

    via GIPHY

I bought 12. I’m not proud, but I surprisingly have no regrets. Candles are the most underrated gifts ever. Even in the movies, they show them to be worthless gifts, but they’re not. They make your home smell like vanilla and cedar and eucalyptus and freakin’ Christmas Cookie!

    Gift Cards

Lots of mixed emotions about this, as well. But why

Even if you feel like that person didn’t put enough thought into bringing you something, you can now buy something you want on your own. It’s a hell of a lot better than them bringing you something you didn’t want in the first place. Plus, they have Visa gift cards, so if you’re not sure what their favorite retailer is, then give them the gift of everything

Godiva Hot Chocolate and Coffee Set

    Coffee lovers, unite!

I guess chocolate lovers can come, too. I would love it if someone recognized my coffee addiction and turned it into a present. This godsent set includes “a white and gold ceramic mug, a 2-ounce package of truffle coffee, a 1.4-ounce package of dark chocolate cocoa and a 1.1-ounce package of milk chocolate cocoa.”

    via GIPHY

People, c’mon, hot beverages, and Belgium chocolate on a wintry day. It’s an ideal and genuinely kind gift.

    Board Games/Puzzles

Holiday time is about family time, right? I see a few of you cringing, I see you

Even if we can’t be around the family during the holidays, there’s always a chance at family fun night, where we play Monopoly until someone flips over the board game out of pure frustration.

It’s good stuff. Board games (NOT Monopoly) are great activities to get the family together and bring out your competitive side. Unless that’s your only side, then you can’t sit with us. Puzzles are a one group thing, and since everyone will be eager to finish, it’s an excellent idea for any night of the week.

    Thrift Shopping

You heard me. You can bring an empty cardboard box with you to a thrift shop, fill it up with clothes, records, books, accessories, and will only leave with $10 out of your wallet.

    via GIPHY

It does not mean you opted for the cheapest option but instead decided that why get one thing per person, when you can get them a year’s supply of novels and if you’re lucky like me, a Duke Ellington record.

    Champagne / Mulled Wine

Mulled wine, or spiced wine, is a necessity for our home during the holidays. I’m the only one who drinks it, but it keeps my hands warm, and isn’t that what the holidays are all about?? Staying warm and getting drunk on hot booze?

    via GIPHY

If mulled wine is not your thing, no worries, the options are endless.

    hanukkahDough (The Green Kind)

Now we’re talking last minute-last minute here. If all else fails, just hand them a crisp 50 or 100 dollar bill. It’s possible the best thing you can do, especially if you have picky loved ones. It doesn’t require much thought, and they can buy something they’ve had their eye on with it.

  • How to Afford Holiday Presents Without Breaking the Bank

How to Afford Holiday Presents Without Breaking the Bank

Ah, the holidays. Oh, the holidays.

Well, which one are you? If you say both, I get it. You believe that this time of year is all about spending time with family, reuniting with friends, eating long buffets of food, enjoying your vacation, and hoping your bank balance won’t show negative by the end of all the holiday shopping. Everyone has different views on how these last couple of months should be celebrated, but we all can agree on one thing: if there’s any way we can spend less money, we want to know about it. I mean, you spend the whole year saving up and earning this hard-earned money, so why not spend it gradually

    via GIPHY

Here a few consumer-friendly tricks to help you pick out the best presents without hopefully drying out your wallet.

    Review Your Budget

Before you start adding up your spending list, take a look at your bank balance. Why not sit down and ask yourself: how much can I really afford to spend this year? It’s not a shameless question, and you shouldn’t feel obliged to use any money if you are incapable.

    via GIPHY

Certain groups of people such as college students, unemployed relatives, and even the ones with underpaid jobs with long hours have a long list of things to think about, and they’re all more likely to be 100% more important than buying you a gift!

    Who Made the List?

It’s incredible how many people you can eliminate from your list once you’ve set a budget. Some people are meant to be prioritized, and that’s the cold hard truth. Usually, the top three people to make it are your partner, your mom, and your dad.

    via GIPHY

Usually. Many of us can’t be home for the holidays, which results in online shopping (and shipping), which in most cases, is expensive. We’ll get into that later.

What I’m saying is your friend Dave from work does not need a present, nor does anyone else you “sometimes” hang around. Again, it’s crucial to prioritize the most relevant people in your life, so you don’t overspend.

     Comparison and Affordability

We live in a futuristic system, which means there is a replica for everything ever created. Take Airpods, for example. They go as high as $300… That’s crazy for a pair of Bluetooth earphones considering there are hundreds more that provide the same function.

    via GIPHY

Brand names are just that…brands. Don’t lose yourself in today’s marketing, where their ultimate goal is to sell you their low-cost products for an outlandish price. People, we live in the internet era. If you can find the product you need for a more moderate amount and it’s highly suggested by other users, buy it. Take advantage of the ratings!

    Coupons Are Life Savers (Literally)

I could say that and be done with it. Seriously. When I think of coupons, I automatically think of Bath and Body Works because they’re out here giving out coupons like it’s nothing. Obviously, I’m more than ok with that. But I’m honestly wondering at this point, how many candles are considered too many

    via GIPHY

Anyways, coupons and promo codes are especially helpful when it comes to purchasing products. You can indeed find anything online, but to be safe, check out these money-saving apps that will change the way you view spending.

Holiday Shopping Isn’t Just for the Holidays

Companies tend to have annual or weekly sales throughout the year. Of course, we cannot forget the most critical day of the year (for me, at least), Black Friday.

Yes, a day so legendary that it has spread to over 15 countries. Also, you can find wild deals on Amazon year-round, so keep your eyes peeled! There’s nothing wrong with purchasing gifts at a lower price and saving them for this particular time of year. Be the savvy smart shopper your mother always wanted you to be.

    Online Instead of In Line

Remember when we used to go into retail stores, wander around, ask for help, and pay with cash? It’s a nostalgic time, that’s for sure. According to CNBC, “Online sales are now the fourth largest sector overall, bringing in about $59.8 billion in adjusted sales for February (2019)”.

    via GIPHY

You may have noticed it in…yourself. You prefer to buy things from the comfort of your own home, and that’s perfectly fine. The speed at which people are switching to online shopping is genuinely terrifying. When Amazon becomes the only retailer left out there, just know we- as a negligent generation- made it happen.

If You Can’t Afford It, Ignore It

Simple as that. Remember that priority list we talked about? Keep going back to it because it is imperative. It may sound harsh, especially for this time of year, but you don’t “owe” anyone anything, I promise. If people understand your situation, then they will have no problem with you not being able to buy them a six hundred espresso coffee machine.

    via GIPHY

It’s the holidays. If you didn’t know, it was never about materialism. It’s about family, closest friends, and realizing how blessed you are to have a plate of food on your table. Soak in all the love, enjoy the laughs, and cherish these memories!

    Happy Holidays!
