  • COVID Safe Labor Day Weekend Getaways

COVID Safe Labor Day Weekend Getaways

Cabin Fever has been setting in for a few months now. No matter how beautifully decorated your home is, you’re getting sick and tired of looking at it. Thankfully, Labor Day is coming up and it’s the perfect excuse to getaway for the weekend.

Your typical Labor Day getaways might not be available this year, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have options. Here are a few ways that you can enjoy the holiday while staying safe.

    Go Camping

If you’re in the need for a complete reset, you need to get in touch with nature. Camping is one of the only ways you can completely disconnect from the world. Nature is one of the only things that remains unchanged because of the pandemic. That will give you a sense of normalcy again.

For your first time camping, you can set up at a camping ground. It’s a predesignated camping area that has everything you need for a safe and fun camping experience. Camping veterans can take their chances by finding their own spot in the woods. If you want to get really crazy, you can go backpacking and rely on your natural instincts while you spend a few nights deep in the forest.

The best part about camping is that it gives you the chance to completely isolate from everyone else. Once you’re out there, you don’t have to worry about exposure or if other people are wearing their masks. Camping is the definition of social distancing.

    Go On A Road Trip

Driving is the best mode of transportation to avoid COVID-19 exposure. Planes, trains, and literally any public transportation all come with a risk, so why do it? There are a million different drivable destinations where you will have a great time while staying safe.

Driving also happens to be the best way to find new and interesting sites off the beaten path. Take a day, or take the whole weekend, to drive around your part of the country. Now is the time to go see that weird sight-seeing attraction in your state. Whether it’s the world’s biggest ball of yarn or a giant duck statue, this is your opportunity to finally see it.

Go the extra mile and spring for an RV. It will enhance your road trip in ways you would have never imagined. RV’s are like having a vacation home on wheels. It’s an amazing experience everyone should have at least once.

If you want to travel out of state, keep an eye on their COVID cases. Don’t travel somewhere that could put you in a risky situation. No destination is more important than your health.

    Vacation Home

If you’re lucky enough to have a vacation home, you have to take advantage of it. Stay for as long as you can and enjoy the change of scenery. The best part is that it feels as comfortable as when you’re home, you won’t feel like a guest or out of place.

Of course, not everyone has a vacation home, but you can always rent one! Rental sites have very clear COVID-19 guidelines that help maintain safety standards for the guests and owners. Read the fine print to ensure that it’s up to your safety standards.

You deserve a romantic getaway to reconnect with your partner. You also need time away to reconnect with yourself. Vacation homes are a no pressure way to enjoy a responsibility free and socially distant trip.

    Rent A Boat

Living near a body of water can be a game changer when you’re looking to get away. Boat life is not only a fun and different way to escape the repetitiveness of your home, but it’s a blast! The fresh air and the breeze off the water can’t be beaten.

If you rent the right boat, you can spend the entire weekend on the water. All you really need is a bathroom, a bed, and a place to put your food and drinks. Then you’re ready to have an amazing time!

This might even be a better option than a vacation home. Check the guidelines for your area before renting. Oh, and don’t forget the sea-sickness medicine. A rocky boat shouldn’t ruin your Labor Day getaway.

    Head To The Beach

Sailing isn’t for everyone and boats might not be your thing, but the water is still beautiful. The beach is a classic getaway spot for couples, friends, and families. It’s a simple day trip, but it can be just what the doctor ordered.

Labor Day signals the end of the summer, which also means the end of beach days. Take advantage of the lifeguards and sunshine while you still can.

Camping or RVing on the beach is an option too! Campsites aren’t limited to the woods or national parks. Beaches cater to campers and give you the opportunity to catch the sunset and sunrise on the water.

    The COVID Friendly Staycation

I know you don’t want to stay at home but depending on where you live you might not have another choice. It’s tough in the world right now and a getaway might not be the best option for you. No problem, there are ways to switch things up and make a staycation exciting.

Set up a tent or a pillow fort in your living room or your backyard. You don’t have to leave your house to get the camping experience. Camping at home could even be a better option then really going camping because you’ll be able to use a real bathroom.

Staycations are affordable and easy ways to unwind and enjoy Labor Day. Good decorations and optimism are all you need to make your staycation a memorable one. Don’t forget, even though you’re home, you should still take off from work. Put your phone away and set boundaries so it will actually feel like a staycation.

    You Deserve This

The stress has been building since March and you need a serious break. These COVID safe Labor Day getaways are stress-free and feasible for anyone who is looking to take a little vacation. It’s time for you to let loose and enjoy the last few days of summer.

  • How to Decide Who Makes the Wedding Guest List

How to Decide Who Makes the Wedding Guest List

Trust me; it isn’t as bad as it sounds. Unless you come from a large family, then it is…a little

It goes without saying that establishing a guest list is a full-time job, so the following information will help ease the decision making so you don’t lose your mind figuring it out. Now, you may think writing a bunch of names on a list is easy enough, but oh gee, here comes your partner’s second cousin wanting to invite his best friend’s cousin’s sister…

    via GIPHY

Obviously, you know better than to invite complete strangers to your wedding. At least, I hope you do, because as we know, it’s packed enough without the extras. You don’t want to cause any tension between you and other family members, but you also have a hundred other things in mind, especially staying within your budget. It’s a doozy, but here a few helpful tips to get you started.

    Some Family Counts

Your immediate family? Add them. Your partner’s immediate family? Of course. Extended family? This one’s a little difficult to pin down, as wedding etiquette says if you invite a few, you might as well ask all.

    via GIPHY

So here’s what you do. Once you write down all your immediate family, think of your closest extended family. Are you speaking to any of them? Do you see them often? Do you both send each other memes and bathroom selfies? If so, then add them with no hesitation. If you or your partner start writing names of people you don’t even recall or haven’t seen in years, you’ve gone too far and need to take a break. The pressure is getting to your head.

    Some Family Does Not

Once again, we are bringing up prominent families because while it’s great to come from one, we never really know any of them. Many of them have probably gotten married without your acknowledgement, so that wave of guilt you may feel not sending them an invite can go straight to hell.

    via GIPHY

Your second or third cousin doesn’t need a seat at your wedding. If anything, they’ll feel confused about why you invited them if you haven’t spoken to them in years. You are under no obligation to invite them.

I repeat: you are under no obligation to invite them. If you’re desperate to see them, plan a family reunion soon.

Cut Out Unruly Friends or Family (You Know the Ones)

Raise your hand if you have that one friend who gets blackout drunk, gets rowdy, dances on tables, develops an Irish accent, and confesses their love for you as you’re cleaning their vomit off your clothes. Cool, now raise your hand if you are that friend. Congrats, you’re paying for this party so if you want to get so crazy that you forget it’s even your wedding, I say go for it!

    via GIPHY

Don’t get too crazy, or people might start thinking you’re sabotaging your wedding on purpose, and something might be wrong…

If you have friends or family who love to make a scene (or two) and know they won’t comply if you ask them to behave, then cut them off. That is terrible energy, and this is your big day. If this person is important to you, you can sit down with them and politely speak to them about their behavior. If alcohol is the trigger, lessen their consumption so you won’t regret inviting them.

Your Co-Worker Is Not Your Friend (Neither Are Your Neighbors)

Not much to be said here.

You share an office, that’s great. It doesn’t mean you have to buy them dinner and a spot at your wedding. While your neighbors may be the “nicest people” you’ve ever met, you don’t have to go as far as inviting them to your wedding. This celebration is for your closest family and friends, not for people who bake you gingerbread cookies on Christmas.

Children Don’t Need to Be Present (With One Exception)

They are your kids. That’s the exception.

    via GIPHY

A few wedding couples may be compliant with having children at their wedding, but if you’re watching your budget, enforce the no kids’ rule. If a parent takes one, they take all. If you have foreign relatives, you understand what all means, don’t you? It means you can’t provide dinner for your guests. in fact, you can’t afford the wedding.

Be ruthless on this day; you deserve it.

    Follow the “Plus One” Rule

If a guest is allowed a plus one, they need to invite someone really, really, really close to them (fiancee, parent, relative). This is not a party where they can ask their buddy Tom who he met playing Call of Duty

    via GIPHY

You are not (will not) spare a seat on your wedding day for someone you’ve never seen in your life. Many people you craved to invite could not be added to the guest list simply because there was no space, and this guy shows up with a stranger? I don’t think so

Enforce the plus one rule. Make it clear to your guests about the limited space you have and how you’re giving them a chance to invite someone dear.

It’s never easy telling someone they’re not invited to the wedding, but Brides has some great advice on how to break the news to them in the most loving and understanding way.

  • What to Look for When Booking a Hotel Room

What to Look for When Booking a Hotel Room

My first time traveling alone, my father sat me down, pointed to his phone, and said, “This is the hotel I booked for you.” At first glance, it seemed like an ordinary hotel, nothing too fancy. The only thing that stuck out was the three stars shining right above the reviews. The hotel location was near a busy intersection, where coincidentally, a police station was right down the road.

    via GIPHY

I can’t blame my father for choosing safety as a priority, especially for his little girl traveling alone. In today’s world, most travelers-especially the younger ones- are so tech-savvy that finding a hotel with all the commodities they need is a click away. By setting your price range, location, and people’s recommendation, booking a hotel takes less than ten minutes.

So, without further ado, here are a few things to consider when booking a hotel room.

    Discounts or Special Offers

Finding the hotel of your dreams is great, but how about finding a great hotel with a significant discount?

    via GIPHY

As we all know, hotel reservations can be very expensive, especially if you’re on a budget or traveling with more than one person. People tend to look at the price per night more than anything else. According to Pavini at Coupons.com, asking for a corner room and booking business hotels in the summer is a surefire way to land a great deal. Some hotels may get you to sign up for their loyalty programs, which gives you access to more exclusive upgrades, events, and experiences.

    Special Services/ Commodities

If you or someone you’re traveling with has a physical disability, then you’re going to prioritize hotels that accommodate to your needs. If you’re away on business and your trip will mostly consist of conferences and meetings, it’s nice to have the hotel staff provide you with a wake-up call and a cup of brewing hot coffee on your way out. Many people like to travel with their pets, so you need to confirm that that hotel you’ve booked is pet friendly.

    via GIPHY

When you walk into your room, is there a small box of chocolate on your pillow compliments of the hotel? Are shampoo, soap, and towels provided for you? These are little details that make a big difference.

    Room Cleanliness

While it may be rare to enter a hotel room and find it a mess, it does tend to happen. How would you know if your hotel overall is a clean estate?

    via GIPHY

Look in the comments, check the customer’s reviews. These people have been there and have more experience, so if you see more than one person complaining about dirty sheets, smelly bathrooms, or trash underneath the bed, it’s safe to say it’s not as clean as the pictures posted on their site.

    Easy Transportation

If you’re situated by an intersection or anywhere else that may be busy all hours of the day, you may have difficulty finding transportation or getting anywhere on foot.

    via GIPHY

Say you call for a taxi and need to be somewhere important, but the streets are so busy that your taxi gets stuck in traffic, forcing you to be late to whatever event you were attending. The hotel may offer transportation, or there might be a bus route you can take, but keep in mind that both those options rely on other people’s schedules and not your own.

    Customer Reviews

As I’ve mentioned before, customer reviews are the go-to when you’re hanging between a yes or no. Many people will describe their experiences, be it good or bad.

You’ll get an idea of what attractions surround the hotel, the best places to eat, what museums are worth a visit and a fellow human being might even mention a few secret upgrades of the hotel that no one knows. The comments may not be all accurate, but they’re helpful in the long run.

    Wi-Fi Strength

When on vacation, I tend to have my phone off all day until right before bed to check for any urgent messages or emails. If it’s a business trip, you can expect me to be on my laptop while I’m sitting, standing, eating, and sometimes sleeping. It’s not a business trip for nothing.

    via GIPHY

Because of this, I need to immediately have the hotel Wi-Fi connected so I can quickly get to work. Do you know what I hate? Having to call the front desk over ten times a day to ask why the Wi-Fi is so slow. I’m sure they hate it, too. If having a fast internet connection is a priority, make sure to check with the hotel beforehand.

    Complimentary Food

Reserving in a hotel with delicious food is excellent. Booking in a hotel with complimentary breakfast food and free open buffets is a bonus.

    via GIPHY

Before checking in, few hotels will inform you that you can eat all the food you want by paying a couple of dollars more. Personally paying a few extra bucks won’t break the bank, and you won’t have to order room service, which we all know can be very pricey.

    Fitness Center

I know it shouldn’t be, but this is a priority of mine when searching for hotels. I immediately check their fitness center to see the types of equipment they offer, and if it’s large enough to be good enough.

Now, it’s not a deal-breaker, but the only way I don’t slack on vacations or work trips is when the hotel gym is beautifully built. It motivates me to workout and allows me to enjoy the equipment they have to offer.

  • Disney Wedding Themes to Help Inspire You

Disney Wedding Themes to Help Inspire You

    via pinterest

Every little girl dreams of being a princess. Regardless of your definition of a princess, this dream comes true on your special day. The traditional white wedding is excellent, but why not take it up a notch and add your childhood touch?  For me, Disney always brings back a wave of nostalgia and soothes my inner child. Would I go as far as setting my wedding theme to my favorite film? Hm, it’s very debatable but highly possible.

If your imagination has no limits and you have boundless love for Disney movies, then we may have a few ideas to get the knobs in your head turning.

A Wish is a Dream Your Heart Makes

You’ve heard of Cindy, right? She becomes a maid to her stepmother and sisters, has a fairy godmother, clumsily leaves her glass slipper at the ball? She goes through a few rough patches, but don’t worry; she marries the prince at the end. While it would be amazing to have a fairy godmother to do all the work for you, it doesn’t work that way in the real world. But good news, there’s no curfew!

    Wedding Chicks

The Cinderella color palette plays with different shades of blue, gold, and pink. A top tier cake with such colors and a castle as a headpiece is perfect. While a carriage isn’t entirely necessary (even though it’d be pretty awesome), having one or two pumpkins for decor will be the right kind of extra. Depending on your budget, decorate the tables with pink roses and tiny “glass” slippers with your guest’s name. Renting a carriage for the photoshoot or as a photo booth for friends is a great way to complete the theme. Don’t forget your tiara and white gloves!

    Let’s Get Down to Business

I grew up watching Mulan, so you can concur it’s one of my top three Disney films.

    Style Me Pretty

A female warrior defeats the Huns and saves all of China, how can you not love this film? If you’re ready to unleash your inner warrior, here are some ideas. This theme dives into East Asian culture, so hanboks, lanterns, dragons, fireworks, and the color red are all prominent. You can choose to decorate the altar with cherry blossoms and use Buddha statues as the centerpiece on tables. Hand fans were a big part of the film, so handing them out as the guest arrives is another fun way to honor this masterpiece.

    We’re All Mad Here

Alice in Wonderland seems to be a favorite for many different types of events all over the world. It’s safe to say many people can relate to the film or love it for its craziness. You have too many options when it comes to Wonderland, from rabbits to teacups to cats to cards to clocks… it’s a lot to take in, but it’s also what makes it amazing to work with.

    Tulle and Chantilly

Providing a tea set on your guest’s table with their names on the cups is brilliant. If you want to be extra, write “drink me” on little alcoholic bottles and leave them around the tables for your guest. You can’t go wrong with the color palette here, as a wide array of colors are present throughout the film.

One of the best-known scenes is when Alice is having tea with the Mad Hatter, and there’s tea everywhere. You can easily remake this at your wedding (but add cake) and make it look like a frenzy. It’d make a fantastic photo booth for friends as well.

    Be Our Guest

Roses, rose petals, tall candles, golden lights, and a custom-themed wedding cake with the Beauty and Beast on top. This theme is incredibly elegant and classy so that it won’t require much work as the others.

    Insider

More importantly,  every table gets its share of rose petals, a single bottle of champagne, and a hand mirror. Since Belle loved to read, you can have your favorite books as decor set around the tables and an empty journal where guests can recommend their favorite books. If you can get your hands on an antique grandfather clock and a chipped teacup, you get bonus points.

    The Human World…It’s a Mess

For some odd reason, this little mermaid wanted to be part of our world. With the global warming crisis, we’ll be part of her world real soon, as well.

When you think of Ariel, you think of the open sea, red hair, seashells, tridents, a beautiful array of light blue, and green colors. I know I don’t have to tell you this, but if you’re going with this theme, you better be near the beach or at least have your photoshoot there. If you can rock red hair, then rock red hair.

    Top Wedding

The beauty of this theme is the simplicity of it. You can scatter seashells and starfish on the ground, around the guests, and decorated on the cake. You can put messages in little glass bottles for your guests as souvenirs. Make sure to have dinglehoppers available on every table in case a guest needs to brush their hair.

  • The Perfect Honeymoon Destination for Every Season

The Perfect Honeymoon Destination for Every Season

Setting a wedding date is hard enough, but having to figure where you’ll be spending your honeymoon is a whole other story. Unfortunately, this isn’t something you can pick from the top of your head. Nor does it require excessive research.

The timing of your honeymoon is just as important (if not more) than the location itself. Think about it, why would you want to go somewhere that’s flooded with tourists in the summer? Or head to a tropical island in the winter?  Some couples may hire a travel agent, so they don’t end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Ask yourself: if this were a regular vacation, where would you wish to go? Does the season permit you to go, or is there somewhere else you can go that allows you to enjoy the same comforts and joys?

    Spring

Belize: With its hundreds of activities, Belize tops the list for Spring honeymoon spots. There is always something to do, no matter what mood you’re in. Not only is it surprisingly affordable to fly there, but the currency conversions also leaves you in a position to widen your budget. Even in the winter months, the climate is warm; it makes a great getaway after May (post-hurricane season). It is also home to the most extensive reef system in the northern hemisphere, making it perfect for diving and snorkeling.

Yosemite: This is a spring choice for couples who wish to enjoy their time in nature. A national park may sound a bit out of reach when choosing a honeymoon, but Yosemite holds some of the most magnificent sights and hiking trails. You can want to stay inside the park, which is pretty costly and needs to be reserved in advance. You can also choose to book a hotel or B&B outside the park to be more cost-efficient.

    Summer

Lake Como, Italy:  Lake Como is incredibly popular among the locals in Milan. All types of exotic flowers bloom and perfume the streets at this time of year. There are many activities you can choose from, or you can stay by the pool and soak in the sun with your partner. You don’t need to know fluent Italian to get around the little town surrounding the lake, and you can go from place to place in a water taxi.

Kruger National Park: This safari adventure is a year-round destination, but here’s the summer perk. You’ll get the experience of a lifetime as this is the park that is filled with wildlife and their newborns. Birdwatching is also another memorable experience as summer migrant birds start arriving. Several resorts are available to help better your visit and enhance your adventurous side.

    Autumn

Lombok, Indonesia: Often referred to as “the second Bali,” Lombok is a beautiful island in Indonesia. Apart from its crystal blue waters and white sandy beaches, it’s home to beautiful and historic sites, including the second-highest volcano in Indonesia, Mt. Rinjani. You can join tours, enjoy the astonishing views from your hikes, or take a stroll on the beach before enjoying authentic Lombak food overlooking the sunset.

B.C., Canada: Autumn in British Columbia is right around when the leaves start changing colors, and the mountains have a thick fog engulfing them. Other than the cozy, cuddle weather, this is the perfect time to witness wildlife and colorful scenery. This is also the best time to visit because it’s fewer crowds, which means more time to do more things!

    Winter

Tromso, Norway: Tromso is known as the “arctic wonderland” during the cold season. This is also when polar night season begins where you can spot colorful lights light up the sky during the day and night. If you’re a ski fanatic, this is most likely your scene, or if you’ve had northern lights on your bucket list, then it’s time to check it off with your partner.

Santorini, Greece: Who goes to Santorini in the winter? Especially for their honeymoon? Let me tell you that this popular vacation spot is so full that it’s difficult to see or do everything you want. By planning for the winter, you get all the sites, all the deals, and the same breathtaking views. By avoiding the crowds, you make the most out of your visit.

  • Going Camping? Try These Delicious Campfire Recipes

Going Camping? Try These Delicious Campfire Recipes

Whenever camping comes up in a conversation, my inner child immediately takes the wheel.

Camping? I love camping. What’s your favorite camping spot? Oh, Big Bear? I actually have a list of camping essentials saved on my phone; you want me to airdrop it to you? We’re definitely planning a trip sometime next week; my family’s been taking camping trips every month since I was nine.

Did I mention I love camping?

No, I am not ashamed to admit I have a problem. Even my partner, who’s a sucker for adventure, thinks I’m a lunatic when it comes to camping trips. In reality, it’s camping that brings keeps me grounded and reminds me to slow down and enjoy everything in the now. The pine trees smell, the dirt underneath my bare feet, a refreshing dip in the lake, fishing (trying, at least), and the most spectacular part of any camping trip-a sky so overflowing with stars that you feel your body leaving your soul.

It’s all enlightening, but let’s move on to what this article’s about: your stomach. Campfire recipes are so simple, so satisfying, and so worth the effort. Trust me, folks, it doesn’t end at s’ mores. You can create a buffet table with the number of things you can make over a campfire.

Don’t believe me? On your next camping trip, try out these easy, straightforward recipes below. The sense of accomplishment is delightful.

    Campfire Breakfast Burger

    Jelly Toast

Before we dive into this scrumptious recipe, know that Emily at Jelly Toast has a black pepper biscuit recipe that perfectly complements this burger. It’s a dry mix, and you add water when it’s ready to make. It’s a beautiful camping hack instead of buying biscuits and having them go dry on the way.

All you’ll need is a cast iron pan, water/cheddar cheese (if you choose to make the biscuits according to her blog), twelve sausage patties, and a dozen eggs. You can use egg rings to cook your biscuits and eggs, so you achieve similar sizes. Cook the sausage patties over medium heat until brown and toasted and top everything together. I personally add a slice of American cheddar cheese because why not? Add your choice of condiment and boom, best breakfast sandwich ever.

    Homemade Cornmeal Griddle Pancakes

    Chez Us

I know what you’re thinking…another breakfast recipe? Trust me; it’s not because “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” No, it’s because breakfast meals are the best meals. There is no arguing here, so let’s get to it.

You can indeed buy your pancake mix anywhere, but why not give yourself the benefit of the doubt, make it at home, and receive endless praise on how amazing it is? This dry mix consists of only five ingredients and can be prepared in under five minutes. You throw the ingredients in a large mason jar, add water, throw on that skillet pan,  smother in hot maple syrup, serve with some sizzling turkey bacon, and devour

I know I don’t have to tell you this because you’re a functioning human, but you brought coffee, right?

    Chili Cheese Fries in Tinfoil

    The Kitchen Magpie

Snack. In no known universe would I ever consider this a lunch or dinner- it is a snack. Now that I’ve got that off my chest let’s talk about the simplicity of this recipe.

You bring a package of fries along, cover the tin foil with cooking spray, and toss them on the grill of your campfire. The time depends on package instructions. When fully cooked, pour a can of chili, and cover (and I do mean cover) the top with your cheese choice. Return to the fire until cheese is melted and ta-da! Chili cheese fries without the mess. Seriously, you chow down and take a nap.

    Marinated Chicken and Onion Kebabs

    Country Living

No headache here, I promise. The marinade is a shortlist, so you can even marinate it the night before you leave. While onions are the only vegetables stated, feel free your own choice of vegetables or fruits on separate skewers. Skewered chicken is one of the most leisurely meals to prepare over a campfire, and it’s always something everyone can agree on. For sides, you can use rice, tortillas, and even add it to a salad if you’re feeling adventurous. The tzatziki sauce is a must, so please don’t leave it out.

Pound Cake and Berry Campfire Skillet Dessert

    Taste and Tell

Ladies and gentlemen, the moment we’ve all been waiting for for…dessert. While camping is all about indulging and enjoying yourself and skinny dipping after the kids fall asleep…I forgot where I was going with this.

We’ve got to squeeze in something healthy here- for the sake of the children, of course. This dessert is simplicity in physical form and thoroughly mouthwatering. It’s so easy to make and delicious that you think to yourself: how have I never thought of this before? I know it’s not camping without s’mores, so feel free to add some mini marshmallow to this skillet and let your tastebuds fly.

  • How Weddings Are Celebrated Throughout the World

How Weddings Are Celebrated Throughout the World

When it comes to wedding traditions, all I know is old, new, borrowed, and blue. It never crossed my mind how unusual this tradition is until I read up on other countries and their way of celebrating. For example, it never occurred to me that a bride’s dress would be any color other than white. I understood that wedding dresses worldwide were different, but white always stuck out as the color of a new beginning.

It’s normal nowadays to see traditions being broken, and couples carving out a new path to create their own customs.

    via GIPHY

As old of a custom it may seem, several cultures still require the man to visit the bride’s family before even proposing, to win the approval of her family, and bestow a dowry upon her. Of course, not everyone is this old-fashioned. Many others chose elopement, and conclude Vegas is the way to go.

Weddings are celebrated a thousand different ways, but no matter the custom or tradition, we can all agree that nothing sounds too outlandish in the name of love.

    South Korea

Like many East Asian countries, South Korea wedding customs focus more on the two families becoming one rather than two people joined together. Since South Koreans are very family-oriented, expect to see hundreds of family members in attendance.

Both the bride and groom and their immediate family wear ceremonial robes known as hanboks to the ceremony. If you’re attending a Korean-American wedding, they may be in the traditional white dress/ black suit attire and might do a wardrobe change after the ceremony. Confucianism heavily influences Korean rituals, so symbolism plays a huge role here.

After the wedding, the newly married couple will pay a visit to the groom’s family where the bride will give the parents dates and chestnuts, a symbol for future offspring. According to WeddingWire, her in-laws will “playfully toss these back to her, and however many she catches said to be the number of kids she’ll have.”

    Palestine

Palestinians believe that marriage is essential to the way of life. While it’s true that many marriages are arranged, many couples nowadays have found love on their own. The couple recites their vows before a sheik and pronounced husband and wife on the spot; the partying comes after. A Palestinian wedding lasts three days: a day of celebration for the bride, a day of celebration for the groom, and a feast for both families coming together.

As you may have guessed, this is focused more on joining two families, as well. Tradition requires the slaughtering of a sheep or cow, and the meat to be passed out to the community. This is a way of asking the community to pray for happiness for the couple.

The traditional dabke dance, singing of poetry, loud music, tables of food, and groups of men marching down the street singing are typical on the morning of the wedding. Even though it’s not mandatory, many brides choose mehndi art (henna) instead of the usual jewelry. The bride kissing the hands of her new in-laws’ parents and vice versa is seen as a way to thank them for joining the couple in matrimony.

    Japan

A traditional Japanese wedding is conducted at a shrine Shinto-style. Brides wear a white kimono, which is a symbol of purity. It is known to be a very private ceremony meant for immediate family and a few friends present.

One of the most widely known traditions is San San Kudo, which translates to three three nine. The couple drink sake three times from three different sized “nuptial cups.” It’s symbolic for the exchange of wedding vows.

Like South Koreans, the Japanese also believe in the power of symbolism and incorporate it heavily into their ceremony. Such items include bamboo, which According to Manhattan Bride, “represents both prosperity and purity.” Another beautiful ritual is the folding of 1000 gold origami cranes “…since cranes mate for life, stand for good fortune, longevity, and peace in the marriage.”

    India

Like the Palestinians, Indian weddings also last three days, beginning with Misri, where the married couple exchange gifts, flowers, gold for the bride, and prayers. Next is the Sangeet party, in which both families (mainly the women) come together for their celebration and dance. Mehendi is the last thing before the wedding, where the bride is embroidered head to toe with henna. The designs drawn are said to strengthen the bond between the couple.

The morning of the wedding (Haldi) is when families spread a mixture of turmeric, oil, and water all over the bride and groom. It’s supposed to calm and moisturize the skin right before the wedding! We’ve all seen how exciting Indian weddings can be because the colors are bold, bright, and vibrant. Throughout the wedding, the families exchange gifts with each other.

    Democratic Republic of Congo

The Congolese people are known for their love of dance, music, and celebration. The stages to marriage for the Congolese date back centuries and performed to this day.

The groom must first win the approval of the bride’s family before even proposing. If they agree, a mayor’s delegate reads them their rites, and they are officially married. As soon as they are married, the groom must present dowry to his in-laws- clothes, jewelry, property, etc.

The rest of the day is spent cooking by the women; dishes including “turtle, crocodile, mutton, salted-boiled-braised fish, shrimp, chicken, beef, rice, potatoes, potatoes, plantains, beans, cassava leaves (Africa)”. One ritual requires the bride’s father or grandfather to pour beer on the ground; it is a way of including their ancestors in the celebration so they can keep an eye on the happy couple in the future.

  • Weddings Throughout the Decades

    Weddings Throughout the Decades

For a substantial part of my young adult life, I was not too fond of weddings. Seriously? Two people decide to spend their lives together and want the whole world to know? Yuck

As my mind matured and a mimosa at ten in the morning became a thing of the past, I slowly began to embrace them. Whenever I’d receive an invitation, I’d feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Why the sudden change in rationality, you ask?

I’ve realized that weddings are ceremonies where two people decide to spend the rest of their lives together and wish for the world to know! It goes deeper than booze and learning the Cha Cha Slide, so you don’t look like an idiot on the dance floor. There was something spiritually enlightening about the whole thing.

    via GIPHY

It’s stressful to plan- especially if you’re the VIP- but if you’re the guest, it’s such fun to attend. I mean, free alcohol and always some family drama peeps out.

Have you ever stopped to wonder what weddings looked like in the past? Yeah, sure, we have Hollywood movies portraying them in a certain way, but how much have weddings changed?

Decades ago were astronomically different than our wedding planning today. From makeup to gown, everything has changed. As each decade brought new considerable changes to the country, the wedding industry took giant leaps and portrayed massive differences every year.

Let’s take a look back to how things were, and how thankful we are for the changes.

1970 (AKA: The Beatles Break Up)

With everything that was happening at the time (Invasion of Cambodia), The Disco Era surprisingly did not have a specific attire when it came to weddings. Silhouettes became very popular in this period, and bridal wear was what we know today as “hippie.” Think flowy, free, and conservative.

Weddings were mainly held with a small gathering in the parents’ backyard, even though open-air ceremonies were becoming popular at this time. This was because of the free-spirited and newly changed nation that emerged in the 1970s. The brides went more of a natural or no-makeup look as simplicity was the key here.

1980 (AKA: Titanic Wreck Is Found)

Puffy sleeves, long-drawn trains, excessive lace, frills, and flowers, and dramatic big hair.

This decade was also when couples were finally able to video record their weddings, which led to the explosive business of the wedding videography industry. Much of the fashion influence was deprived of Princess Diana (a fashion icon, really) when she married Prince Charles in 1981. By the 1980s, weddings were performed at religious sites, synagogues, and hotel ballrooms. The bride’s goal was to be as extravagant as possible, with bold makeup colors, and head topped with a mountain of curls. The bigger, the better!

1990 (AKA: End of the Cold War)

The dramatic presentation of the 1980s diminished as the 1990s came with a more minimalist approach. Sleek and sexy was the new look. Celebrity marriages influenced the style Millennials mirrored at the time. Elopements became extremely popular also, as did destination weddings.

Due to the plethora of 90’s wedding movies, many couples sought inspiration from these Hollywood favorites (Father of the Bride, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Only You). Bouquets shrunk in size, and hiring someone to arrange your wedding became a thing. Personalization was slowly, but surely, becoming a thing as well.

2000 (AKA: George W. Bush Elected President)

The start of a new millennium.

As more and more people personalized their weddings, fewer ceremonies took place in houses of worship. This meant dresses required less fabric and were more ostentatious. Most brides opted for halter tops and even strapless dresses. As destination weddings became more popular, flower bouquets also got an upgrade, ranging from colorful to even tropical choices. Bold colors in makeup took a step down as most opted for a more natural or otherwise light makeup look. Instead of veils, crowns and tiaras became the new headpiece choice for the bride.

2010s & Today (AKA: WTF Is Going On)

Creativeness has officially joined the chat. There is only one word to capture the spirit of this decade, and that is wholesomeness

Couples were getting married at a younger age, and ceremonies took place in backyards like old times and city halls. Instead of the traditional white, couples sometimes chose a bold color to set with the reception’s theme. Body fitted dresses such as the mermaid were in as minimalism was the niche of the decade.

It’s difficult not to fall in love with this decade as many broke traditions and created their own. For example, twenty years ago, only a priest could officiate your wedding, but now, anyone can get a certificate online, and your best pal could do the honor. The simpler, the better.

  • Feeling Brave?

    Feeling Brave?

Here Are 5 Horror Films to Keep You up at Night

If you’re a fan of horror films and watching movies where someone’s chopping another’s body like they’re short on meat for dinner, we cannot be friends. Fun fact about me: I got kicked out of the AMC for excessive screaming when watching Insidious. Excessive screaming. Isn’t that the point of these films?

I never like to think of myself as a weak-hearted and generally very wussy person, but there are exceptions…horror films. I don’t care if this is “the best horror film you’ve seen in forever.” I don’t want to hear the plot, Karen; I am fragile. When I do feel brave enough-which is unfortunately very rare- I do insist on recommendations to ride out what I like to call the “brave wave.” Do I ultimately enjoy the film (that I’ve watched with five other people in the room)? Yes, of course. Do I regret it when I’m lying in bed and my husband’s working late? Yes, absolutely.

    via GIPHY

The thing is, I’ll rewatch the film because hey, now I’ve grasped the plot and there’s no way I’ll be surprised again. If anything, it should toughen me up a bit, but no. I become jumpy all over again.

As exciting as my life story as a horror film hater is, there are a few films that have caught my attention and had me on the edge of my seat…and digging my nails into my partner’s arms. I have a love-hate relationship with these films, and if you’ve got the guts, be sure to add them to your watch list.

    Insidious: Chapter 3

When anyone asks for a movie recommendation, this is my go-to, because 1) I want them to recognize how brave I am and 2) it’s the first horror film I’ve ever seen. There are four of these films combined, but having only watched this one, it’s safe to say I don’t want to watch the rest.

    via GIPHY

In this chapter, the main character, a teenage girl named Quinn, wishes to contact her deceased mother. She locates a psychic to help her perform the connection, but everything backfires when an evil spirit answers her call and creates physical damage to her and her surroundings. Expect a few screams to jump out of you, a couple of squeals, burying your face in a pillow, and more than a few sleepless nights. Till this day, if I hear a knock through the wall, I leave the house. Yes, I know, weak.

    It Follows

This movie was a bit easier to live down. It took a couple of weeks, but eventually, I got over it. Our main character Jay becomes the recipient of a “fatal curse” after intercourse with her date.

    via GIPHY

You see, the curse could only be passed on to another through sex. Jay begins to see figures of strangers or friends follow her wherever she goes, and no one can see them but her. This ultimately makes her look insane in front of her friends. If it touches you, you die, so Jay and her friends go on the run, hoping to leave it behind. As her friends begin to see what Jay sees, they realize it’s impossible to get away from it, and killing it is the solution. If you want bonus points, watch this in the dark, and whatever you do, don’t look behind you.

    Don’t Breathe

Rocky’s dream is to move to California to create a better life for her and her sister. Short on money, she and two of her friends decide to break into the home of a Gulf War veteran who is rumored to have a safe packed with cash. They quickly discover the blind veteran isn’t as vulnerable as he looks. Packed with suspense, gore, and confined spaces, you’ll have goosebumps throughout this suspense thriller.

    via GIPHY

The audience is left with two choices: should they kill the old man and get away with it or the old man kills them? Both seem to be morally corrupt.

A word of advice? Make sure to take a deep breath every once in a while because this film is not for the faint-hearted.

    The Invisible Man

Imagine being haunted by something you can’t see but can see and touch you. The brilliant Elisabeth Moss has once again outdone herself in this captivating horror/thriller masterpiece.

    via GIPHY

Nowadays, most horror films have a supernatural element, but The Invisible Man is truly a horror that stands out due to its Sci-Fi element. Thanks to her riveting performance, the main character’s fears and hopes will become yours throughout the film. The music soundtrack keeps you in a deep trance as the camera slowly spans across the room, sending chills down your spine. Following its notorious ending, you can’t help but wonder who the real monster is but I can tell you this, lions, tigers, and bears, isn’t it.

    The Autopsy of Jane Doe

This is one of those psychological horrors that you can’t stop thinking about all day. It’s true what you’ve heard; most of the plot is predictable but an incredible storyline, nonetheless.

As father and son coroners perform an autopsy on an unidentified woman, questions keep piling up. As the majority of the film is shot from the inside of the morgue, the atmosphere remains eerie, and of course, the creepy sound effects always come at the exact moment. Overall, it’s worth a watch as the suspense will have you biting on your nails. Be warned, though, this is the type of horror flick that will cause you to lose sleep.

  • The Best Tips for Planning a Baby Shower

The Best Tips for Planning a Baby Shower

When it comes to planning anything, my mind automatically brings up the most useful invention known to humankind: the list. Lists are lifesavers when planning events, especially events that you’re planning for others, require tons of brainstorming, and attention to every detail. While this article may sound like it’s about the wonders of lists and how I personally can’t live without them, it’s not

Planning a baby shower can sometimes feel similar to planning a wedding. No, that’s not an over-exaggeration as both events do demand hard work and full heartedness.

    via GIPHY

You have to go through the guest list, discover a theme, figure out what foods to prepare, what games to play, etc. All planning becomes hectic unless you have a checklist and a solid idea of how you’ll be moving forward. This is a war zone, people. Do not tread lightly.

No worries, it’s easier than you may think. I mean, you’re throwing a party for an unborn fetus, trust me, it shouldn’t be that complicated. Here are some of my favorite tips for throwing an unforgettable baby shower.

    Who’s Invited?

A guest list will always be one of the most important things you do because it provides you with valuable information on how many guests you will accommodate. Therefore, how to plan the rest of the party.

    via GIPHY

Now, there are three ways you can do this: phone calls, emails, or traditional letters in the mail. The number of possibilities for designs is astronomical. Designs range from cartoon characters, baby animals, Disney favorites, pink flowers, blue cars, etc. A quick email would be the most straightforward thing to do, but we’re looking for unforgettable here, so go the extra mile and stick with the postal office.

Want to really impress the mother to be and your guests? Send out onesies or stroller shaped invitations. Once you unleash your creative side, there’s nothing you can’t do.

    Pick a Theme

Whether you’re planning your own party, or you’re someone helping out a friend, it’s essential to know what theme to pick. This could solely be based on the mother’s personal choice, discovering imaginative ideas from Pinterest, children’s books, or the King of all themes- a Winnie the Pooh theme. You don’t want to give away the gender of the baby, so avoid gender-based topics such as princess or fast cars.

    via GIPHY

Your choice of theme is what will help you tie up the smaller details later. For example, say you pick a baby animal theme. When you’re decorating cupcakes (or buying them, no judging), you know to use baby animals as inspiration and decoration.

    Game Face ON

It’s game time. If you have a competitive streak, please keep in mind you’re at a baby shower. Focus more on the fun than winning.

You can go all out in this category or do something as simple as having your guests paint white onesies. There are sitting games (baby bingo) and couple games (these are more competitive). Depending on how well you plan these games, it’s going to be what everyone’s going to talk, laugh, and remember later.

Here’s a list of games that will leave an impression.

    Who’s Hungry?

Many people believe that baby shower food must be colored pink and blue, but that’s not true. The good idea is to be familiar with the host’s likes and dislikes when it comes to food. In honor of them, you’d focus on making or buying their favorite foods. While some people do correlate the food with the theme, it’s not mandatory. In the end, the presentation is truly everything.

    Make it Personal

As you plan and execute all the beautiful things you’re doing, don’t lose sight of the VIP of the party- the mother to be. In honor of her, the majority of her favorite foods, drinks, and activities should all be included on your checklist.

    via GIPHY

If possible, try to arrange the party at her favorite place, whether it be a restaurant, cafe, or park. This will not only get you bonus points with the host,  but your guests will also regard the hard work you’ve put in.

    Baby Party Favors

Are they a must? Eh, no, but again, unforgettable. There is no need to be over the top, I promise, but something to let your guests know you’re grateful to them for attending and participating. Also, the host will be ecstatic that you went the extra mile for her guests because it shows you genuinely care.

There are places where you can buy customized party favors, but if you’re trying to keep expenses low, then DIY is also a fantastic idea. Ultimately, it’s the thought that matters.
